Satellite communications, technology, and entrepreneurship by Abel Avellan
Abel Avellan is founder and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, a company valued above USD 8 billion in 2025, building the first space-based broadband network for direct-to-device communications. The company has launched five commercial satellites to date and aims to cover underserved regions with 4G and 5G connectivity. Avellan previously founded Emerging Markets Communications, later acquired for USD 550 million, and holds more than 25 patents in satellite communications.
By extending internet access to billions of people, Avellan indirectly influences crypto adoption in regions lacking traditional broadband. AST SpaceMobile has signed agreements with more than 40 mobile network operators, covering over 2 billion potential subscribers. The project received FCC clearance for U.S. spectrum rights and secured international approvals for up to 45 MHz of mid-band frequency. Avellan regularly appears at telecom summits, UN Broadband Commission events, and investor conferences. With a career spanning more than 20 years and satellite launches costing over USD 1.6 billion in total capital investment, Avellan represents a key enabler for digital economies, including Web3 access in remote markets.
