Timothy Eugene Scott has served as U.S. Senator from South Carolina since 2013, after an appointment by then-Governor Nikki Haley and subsequent election victories. He is the first Black senator from the South since Reconstruction and one of only 11 African Americans ever to serve in the U.S. Senate. Scott has built his political identity around economic opportunity, educational choice, and criminal justice reform, notably authoring the Opportunity Zones provision in the 2017 tax bill.

Born in 1965 in North Charleston, South Carolina, Scott was raised by a single mother who worked long hours to support her family. He graduated from Charleston Southern University with a degree in political science while running a successful insurance business. His political career began on the Charleston County Council, later serving in the South Carolina House of Representatives and the U.S. House before his Senate appointment. Scott’s speeches often draw from his personal journey of overcoming adversity, which has resonated with constituents across ideological lines. In 2023, he ran in the Republican presidential primaries, further raising his national profile as a potential vice presidential candidate and prominent conservative voice.
