Costco price tracker shows stable consumer basket as oil and protein costs rise
A yearlong check of shelf prices at a Costco warehouse in Madison, Wisconsin shows only modest overall inflation despite pressure from energy, tariffs, and global supply disruptions. A basket of 45 items has risen 2.3% since January and 3% since July, with the latest gains concentrated in motor oil, protein powder, aluminum foil, and some fresh produce.
Highlights
- Costco's tracked basket totals $884.60 on October 13, up $20 from January, indicating relative price stability despite fluctuations in specific categories.
- Kirkland Signature motor oil price jumps 60% from June to $57.99 in October due to refining bottlenecks and attacks on oil infrastructure driving up diesel costs.
- Blueberry prices more than double from $3.99 in July to $8.99 in October, and aluminum foil rises from $26.99 in May to $32.69 in October, reflecting commodity strain.
Price trends across the tracked basket
As reported by Business Insider, the tracked basket totals $884.60 on October 13, up from $864.60 in January, suggesting that broad grocery and merchandise prices remain relatively steady even as individual categories face sharper swings. The basket edges up from January to April, largely because a two-pound bag of Starbucks coffee beans increases by $3.20. In May, four-pound packs of organic ground beef are replaced with similar-sized packs of conventional beef at about the same price, $24.99, helping limit the effect of higher beef costs.
By June, the basket sits about $10 below its April peak as modest reductions across much of the list offset a $10 jump in whey protein, where shortages continue to constrain supply. In July, bacon and berries get cheaper, while Kirkland motor oil rises by $4 and Charmin reduces the size of its 30-roll toilet paper pack by 60 square feet while also cutting the sticker price by $3.
Energy and commodity pressures build
Recent increases are becoming more visible in categories tied to commodity markets and transport costs. The clearest example in the warehouse is Kirkland Signature motor oil, which climbs to $57.99 in October, a 60% increase from June, as refining bottlenecks and attacks on oil infrastructure push diesel prices higher.Other items are also showing strain. Blueberries rise from $3.99 in July to $8.99 in October, although seasonal availability may also be influencing fresh berry prices, while aluminum foil increases from $29.99 in July to $32.69 in October after costing $26.99 in May.
Costco says it works with vendors to manage commodity inflation and limit shelf-price increases. On a conference call last month, CEO Ron Vachris says reducing pricing remains a continual focus for buyers, but warnings from food suppliers and grocers suggest higher energy costs and the winding down of tariff refunds may add further pressure in coming months.
In our earlier article on the spike in crude oil shipping costs, we explained how conflict-driven risks on key tanker routes have pushed freight and insurance rates sharply higher, making transport a much larger share of the delivered oil price. We also noted that pricier shipping can translate into higher gasoline and diesel costs, which then ripple into grocery and retail prices through more expensive distribution and supply chains.
