Backblaze, Inc. is encouraging site reliability engineers (SREs) to move away from custom scripts for data retention and instead leverage automated cloud storage tools.

The company promotes the use of S3-compatible lifecycle rules, allowing users to set retention policies once and eliminate repetitive manual tasks. Backblaze, Inc. claims this approach reduces the so-called manual labor tax on storage management while increasing operational efficiency.
