PayPal launches PYUSDx infrastructure for stablecoins
PayPal, M0, and MoonPay have launched PYUSDx, an infrastructure platform that allows businesses to create customized stablecoins backed by PayPal USD. The rollout extends the role of PYUSD beyond direct payments, giving outside financial applications a way to use the PayPal-linked stablecoin as their underlying reserve asset.
Highlights
- PayPal, M0, and MoonPay launched PYUSDx.
- PYUSDx lets businesses create custom stablecoins backed by PayPal USD.
- Saturn, Concrete, and Cap have processed more than $100 million combined.
- MoonPay issues the custom tokens, while Paxos separately issues PYUSD.
The platform went live on Sept. 9 with Saturn, Concrete, and Cap, whose projects have collectively processed more than $100 million, Crypto.News reported. The companies have not disclosed how that activity was divided among the three projects or whether the figure represents transfers, settlements, minting, or another measure.
PayPal extends PYUSD beyond payments
PYUSDx is not a token or a stablecoin. It is an issuance framework that allows businesses to create separate application-specific stablecoins backed by PYUSD, with configurable rules covering access, rewards, collateral, and availability across blockchain networks.
Saturn uses the infrastructure for USDat, a dollar-denominated token designed for settlement. Concrete has launched concUSD for its on-chain vault infrastructure, while Cap uses cUSD as the native dollar asset for its credit platform. USD.AI and Fairblock are expected to join later.
M0 developed the programmable infrastructure behind PYUSDx, while MoonPay Digital Assets handles issuance, onboarding, and distribution of the customized tokens. PayPal provides the connection to PYUSD rather than directly issuing the tokens created through the platform.
PYUSD and PYUSDx carry different structures
Paxos Trust Company separately issues PYUSD. The stablecoin is redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars and backed by dollar deposits, U.S. Treasuries, and similar cash equivalents.
That distinction matters because holding a stablecoin created through PYUSDx does not necessarily provide the same issuer relationship or redemption terms as holding PYUSD directly. Conditions can depend on the participating company, MoonPay's issuance structure, and the smart contracts governing conversions.
Tokens issued through PYUSDx also cannot currently be sent, received, or used for payments within PayPal or Venmo. Those restrictions keep the new infrastructure separate from PayPal's existing consumer-facing PYUSD services.
PayPal broadens its stablecoin strategy
PYUSDx gives PayPal another route to expand the reach of PYUSD without operating every application built on top of it. If businesses using the framework grow, their customized stablecoins could generate additional demand for PYUSD as backing.
The reported $100 million-plus in processed activity provides an early measure of usage, but it should not be interpreted as PYUSDx market capitalization, revenue, or assets under management. Future adoption will depend partly on whether new projects can provide clear reserve, conversion, and redemption terms as the platform expands.
We have previously highlighted that PayPal puts stablecoins at the center of its payments strategy.
