OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries as revenue push broadens
ChatGPT ads go global

OpenAI is widening ad availability on ChatGPT to deepen monetization across international markets. The move lifts the total number of countries with access to 89 as the company builds advertising revenue ahead of a potential initial public offering.

Highlights

  • OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 new countries, now covering Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia, after initial U.S. rollout.
  • Annualized revenue run rate for OpenAI's ads business reached $1 billion in August, powered by campaigns from over 100,000 advertisers.
  • Ads are shown only on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans, enabling OpenAI to grow ad revenue while maintaining ad-free experiences for paying subscribers.

Global rollout broadens ad access

As reported by Reuters, OpenAI says it is expanding advertising on ChatGPT to 26 additional countries, extending a rollout that began earlier this year in the U.S. The company says more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns on the platform since ads testing started.

OpenAI says its ads business reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion in August. Advertisers in the newly added markets can buy ChatGPT ads through technology partners or use self-service access through the company's Ads Manager platform.

The latest expansion includes 14 more countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, after earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil. Ads are also launching across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, including Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Revenue strategy ahead of possible IPO

ChatGPT ads appear only on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free. That structure allows OpenAI to add a new revenue stream while preserving a premium experience for paying users.

In September, the company introduced AI-powered tools for advertisers and began testing business-sponsored agents with select U.S. advertisers. The broader geographic rollout signals that OpenAI is scaling its ad business as a more material part of its commercial model.

In our earlier coverage of how AI is reshaping business competitiveness, we explained that the rapid spread of AI is raising performance standards and leaving less room for “average” execution. The piece highlighted that companies need to revisit investment priorities, workforce skills, and decision-making processes to stay relevant as AI-driven productivity and automation become a structural shift rather than a passing trend.
