But we saved everything 🙂.
SK Hynix’s third-quarter operating profit reached 83.3 trillion won due to the rapidly growing AI memory demand. While Samsung is working to narrow the market-share gap, SK Hynix’s technological expertise may help it maintain leadership positions. Can SK Hynix turn the AI memory boom into sustained growth as hyperscalers continue increasing their infrastructure spending?
In the third quarter of 2026, SK Hynix reported revenue of 104.6155 trillion won, reaching an operating margin of approximately 80 percent. Quarterly sales exceeded 100 trillion won for the first time in the company’s history. The results have become possible due to sales of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs.

HBM4 shipments have drastically increased during the third quarter. Management expects this segment to overtake the prior-generation HBM3E in both volume and revenue during the fourth quarter. The company’s production capacity at the M15X facility in Cheongju will enable the technical possibility of this scenario. The overall industry conditions also remain positive.
SK Hynix has made long-term agreements with 14 major customers, including cloud service providers. These contracts cover about 50 percent of planned production capacity for 2027 and 2028. The company states that its DRAM and HBM output is sold out through 2029. This allows its management to make medium- and long-term plans as well as attract additional investments.

Customer requests for HBM exceed the volume the company can supply by more than two times. Realistic bit-growth demand for 2027 is in the 25 percent range for DRAM and up to 20 percent for NAND.
“We expect an environment in which supply falls short of demand to persist through 2030,” Kim stated during the earnings discussion.
SK Hynix retained leadership in the HBM market, accumulating 50 percent of global HBM revenue in the second quarter of 2026. Samsung Electronics narrowed the gap as it increased its share to approximately 33 percent, while Micron held 18 percent. However, SK Hynix states that yields on its HBM4 have exceeded initial targets. The economy of scale may also provide it with extra competitive advantages.

The high demand for advanced memory has shifted pricing power toward suppliers. Legacy DRAM contract prices rose about 15 percent in recent periods. So high margins tend to become even more important across the product portfolio. At the same time, other companies also recognize emerging possibilities in this sphere, so profitability rates may start declining in the following years.
The scale of SK Hynix’s 2026 results also affects the overall semiconductor economics. The company has outlined shareholder returns of around 100 trillion won for the year. The key components include cash dividends and share buybacks and retirements. This shows the management is expecting stable free-cash-flow generation.

Capital expenditure by global cloud service providers may rise more than 60 percent in 2027. The AI data center infrastructure market may demonstrate growth of 40 percent through 2030. Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman observes that SK Hynix effectively follows the latest AI trends and describes its valuation as attractive relative to the multiyear visibility. He claims that some customers are interested in extending long-term agreements toward longer horizons.
SK Hynix is promoting a “full-stack AI memory” approach with a focus on custom HBM solutions, AI-optimized DRAM and NAND products, etc. The company is also prioritizing high-value server products such as DDR5 and enterprise SSDs. Even potential adjustments in HBM stack height (from 12-high toward 8-high configurations) should not reduce overall capacity demand, according to experts’ estimates.

As of late October 2026, SK Hynix effectively combines record profitability, locked-in multiyear volumes, and technological leadership in HBM4. The pricing power and capital capacity directly affect decisions made by cloud providers and other major stakeholders. This maintains South Korea’s role in the AI infrastructure supply chain. While the global environment may radically change in the future, SK Hynix appears to be better prepared for potential opportunities and threats.
