The property becomes the 24th location worldwide for the Edition luxury lifestyle brand and marks its first presence on the African continent.Marriott, based in the U.S., is operating the hotel and residences, while the investment comes from the V&A Waterfront Company, jointly owned by JSE-listed Growthpoint Properties and the Government Employees Pension Fund through the Public Investment Corporation. The hotel includes 142 guest rooms and suites, five dining venues led by executive chef Phil Carmichael, a rooftop heated pool deck and a subterranean spa with five treatment rooms, alongside a 24-hour gym. Shanghai-based architectural firm Neri&Hu designed the building with local firm StudioMAS, and the interior features a cylindrical atrium called The Drum as a central design element.
Tourism and investment significance for Cape Town
The opening adds to Cape Town’s expanding hotel and tourism market and represents a notable new high-end asset for the city. The development is described as the biggest investment in a single hotel property in Cape Town and South Africa since the hotel building wave linked to the FIFA World Cup, when the One&Only Cape Town opened in 2009.The Cape Town Edition now joins a global portfolio that includes destinations such as Lake Como, Tokyo and New York, reinforcing the city’s position within Marriott’s international luxury network. V&A Waterfront CEO Graham Wood says the opening helps elevate Cape Town as a competitive global tourism and investment destination.
