A $420,000 mistake

American musician Garrett Dutton, better known as G. Love, said he lost 5.9 BTC worth about $420,000 after installing a malicious app posing as the Ledger Live crypto wallet on the App Store. According to him, he entered his seed phrase after installing the app, and the funds disappeared almost instantly.

As the artist shared on X, the 5.9 BTC had been accumulated over nearly a decade and were intended as part of his retirement savings. Dutton admitted it was his mistake for not being careful enough, but said his case should serve as a warning to others.

On-chain analyst ZachXBT later reported that the stolen Bitcoin was transferred to deposit addresses linked to crypto exchange KuCoin across nine transactions. KuCoin responded under the post with a standard message typically directed at customers.

Why the musician lost his funds

Dutton said he downloaded the malicious app on a new Apple MacBook Neo but did not specify which link he used. At the time of writing, the fake Ledger Live app could no longer be found on the App Store.

This type of scam is not new. In 2023, scammers stole nearly $600,000 in Bitcoin from users who downloaded a fake Ledger Live app from Microsoft’s store. The company later admitted the malicious software had passed its review process and removed it shortly after.

Scammers turn to AI

Recently, scammers have increasingly relied not only on fake apps but also on artificial intelligence tools. These are used to create phishing websites that mimic popular platforms, generate convincing messages on behalf of companies, and even imitate real people’s voices and videos.

Such schemes are becoming harder to detect. Users now face deepfakes, fake support services, and automated chatbots that appear to be legitimate. As a result, even experienced market participants are increasingly falling victim, as traditional verification methods are no longer always effective.

It is worth noting that 2025 has been highly successful for Ledger: the company reported strong financial results and has begun preparations for an IPO.
