Jeff Bezos backs AI startup developing next-generation chip materials
Jeff Bezos has joined a $450 million funding round for British artificial intelligence startup CuspAI, which is developing software to accelerate the discovery of new materials for semiconductor manufacturing. The investment comes as chipmakers search for alternatives to scarce minerals and faster ways to develop the materials needed for next-generation semiconductors.

The Cambridge-based company said Monday that it raised $450 million in Series B financing led by venture firms Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with significant participation from Bezos Expeditions, the Bezos family investment office. The funding values CuspAI at $2.6 billion, up from $520 million less than a year ago, according to Bloomberg.
AI shifts toward semiconductor research
CuspAI also launched the AI Materials Foundry, a consortium of more than 48 technology companies, industrial groups, and research institutions. Members include Nvidia, Meta Platforms, and Hyundai Motor Group.
The initiative aims to combine computing resources, laboratory capacity, and scientific expertise to accelerate the discovery of new materials for semiconductors, batteries, and other industrial applications. Company executives say AI can reduce the time and cost required to identify promising materials before laboratory testing begins.
About 80% of CuspAI's research this year will focus on semiconductors. One priority is finding alternatives to supply-constrained metals such as ruthenium and iridium, which are widely used in advanced chip production.
The company plans to use part of the new funding to expand laboratories and research operations in Cambridge, Singapore, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Investors bet on AI beyond software
CuspAI originally focused on materials for carbon capture and water purification before shifting toward semiconductor research in response to rising demand from the chip industry.
The startup has assembled a prominent advisory team that includes AI pioneers Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton. Former Apple and Google executive John Giannandrea is helping establish its California operations, while AMD Ventures also participated in the latest financing round.
Despite attracting major investors and industry partners, CuspAI has not yet produced a commercially viable material. Executives argue that limited experimental capacity, computing infrastructure, and scientific data remain major bottlenecks across the field.
Growing interest in AI driven scientific discovery
The funding highlights a broader shift in artificial intelligence investment from software toward industrial research. Rather than building consumer AI products, companies such as CuspAI are applying machine learning to materials science in hopes of accelerating breakthroughs that could reshape semiconductor manufacturing and other industries.
For Bezos, the investment expands his exposure to AI companies working on scientific discovery instead of foundation models alone. For the semiconductor industry, the stakes are high: faster materials discovery could reduce dependence on scarce metals, strengthen supply chains, and support future advances in AI hardware, although commercial results remain several years away.
