Circle expands blockchain IP holdings with IBM patent purchase
Circle acquires IBM patents

As digital asset companies push to build broader financial infrastructure, Circle is acquiring nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM. The deal gives Circle one of the largest such portfolios in the U.S. and is intended to support USDC, its Arc blockchain and tools for AI-driven financial services.

Highlights

  • Circle acquired over 680 blockchain-related patent families from IBM, broadening its portfolio across finance, infrastructure, supply chain, and cloud security.
  • IBM, previously holding 790 U.S. blockchain patents per December 2025 PatSnap data, enhances commercial collaboration prospects with Circle following the deal.
  • Circle's patent acquisition supports USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc blockchain and AI-focused financial tools, driving CRCL shares up 2.5% in premarket trading.

Patent portfolio broadens infrastructure strategy

As reported by CoinDesk, Circle acquired a portfolio spanning more than 680 patent families from IBM, covering blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification and cloud security. The companies do not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.

IBM was already among the largest U.S. blockchain patent holders before the sale. A December 2025 analysis by patent analytics firm PatSnap credits IBM with 790 patents, alongside Advanced New Technologies and Bank of America.

Circle says the newly acquired intellectual property will support USDC, Circle Payments Network, its Arc blockchain and financial tools designed for AI agents. The companies also plan to explore additional commercial opportunities together.

Market implications for Circle and digital finance

Sarah Wilson, Circle's general counsel and corporate secretary, says intellectual property is critical to advancing the company's mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure. Circle received its first patent covering parallel blockchain data processing in December 2023 and earlier joined the LOT Network to protect its products from patent-assertion firms.

The acquisition strengthens Circle's position as it expands beyond stablecoins into broader financial and enterprise blockchain services. CRCL shares are up 2.5% in premarket trading.

In our earlier coverage of the CLARITY Act’s stablecoin provisions, we explained how new draft ethics language in the Senate reshaped the timeline for U.S. legislation that could define how stablecoins connect crypto markets with mainstream finance. We noted that delays and enforcement concerns may prolong regulatory uncertainty, affecting stablecoin-linked products, tokenization plans, and broader onchain infrastructure adoption.
