Two Binance employees detained in UAE over fund flow investigations
Two Binance employees were detained at airports in the United Arab Emirates in recent weeks to provide statements as part of police investigations. The company said the employees were not subjects of the investigations.
The inquiries concerned third-party fund flows through an account on Binance. The incidents have drawn attention as the UAE is one of the key markets for the world’s largest crypto exchange, which obtained a license in Dubai in 2022.
Binance employees detained at airports
According to The New York Times, the detentions were linked to a broader investigation into potential financial crimes involving the Binance platform. One mid-level employee was stopped at Sharjah airport, taken to a police station and held overnight.
Another representative of Binance’s Dubai-based unit was questioned at a police station in July. The company told media outlets that a small number of employees had been asked to provide statements as part of routine inquiries into third-party fund flows.
Binance stressed that none of the employees were subjects of the investigations. All were released after providing the requested information, and authorities did not bring any allegations against them personally.
The exchange said it is cooperating with Dubai Police and authorities in other emirates. Binance noted that cryptocurrencies and institutional client account structures remain relatively new concepts in many jurisdictions, and the parties are working to establish appropriate coordination procedures.
Binance faces investigations in multiple countries
This is not the first time Binance employees have become involved in proceedings with law enforcement authorities. In 2024, Binance financial crime compliance executive Tigran Gambaryan was detained in Nigeria and spent nearly eight months in custody.
Separate investigations involving cryptocurrency platforms are also continuing in other countries. In India, the Enforcement Directorate arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged crypto investment scheme that affected more than 248,000 users.
According to the agency, around 500 million rupees may have been stolen through fraudulent investment platforms, while the total value of transactions linked to the investigation exceeded $219 million. The case is based on complaints registered by law enforcement authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
We previously reported that an FBI agent was charged with stealing cryptocurrency following alleged transfers of around $1 million in digital assets. Investigators believe the funds were moved through several transactions.
