Cross-chain protocol NEAR Intents was hit by an attack that resulted in losses of around $3.8 million. The team suspended some services and temporarily disabled deposits and withdrawals across several blockchains.

The incident was caused by a flaw in the interaction between the Omni deposit and withdrawal system and the NEAR Intents smart contract. Developers have already fixed the vulnerability and pledged to fully reimburse affected users for their losses.

NEAR Intents allows users to swap assets across different blockchains without having to choose a bridge, exchange or route themselves. Users specify the transaction they want to make, after which independent market makers compete to execute it. According to the project, the system has processed more than $30 billion across 35 networks.

Hacker moves funds through BNB Chain

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT said the attack began with suspicious withdrawals from a NEAR Intents hot wallet on BNB Chain. The stolen funds were later sent to crypto exchange KuCoin and converted into Bitcoin through cross-chain infrastructure.

The NEAR Intents team reported the incident to law enforcement and brought in security and blockchain analytics specialists to trace the assets. Core services are expected to be restored shortly, although operations on several networks will remain restricted until the fixes are completed.

The issues affected BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, TON, Optimism, Avalanche, Stellar, Monad, X Layer, ADI, Scroll and Plasma. However, the vulnerability was located in NEAR Intents' cross-chain infrastructure rather than the underlying NEAR Protocol blockchain.

The NEAR token fell around 6% over 24 hours following the incident. However, the team did not report any compromise of the blockchain itself or its consensus mechanism.

Crypto industry losses from attacks exceed $1 billion in Q3

The NEAR Intents hack comes amid a sharp increase in losses from attacks on cryptocurrency services. In the third quarter of 2026, total losses from security incidents reached $1.26 billion.

The recent $387.5 million Bitget hack was the largest contributor, accounting for around 31% of all losses recorded during the quarter. Other major incidents included attacks on Liquid Network for approximately $320 million, Drift for $295 million and Kelp for $293 million.

The rise in total losses shows that attacks are affecting different layers of crypto infrastructure, from centralized exchanges to DeFi and cross-chain protocols. The NEAR Intents incident extended this series into the beginning of the fourth quarter.Earlier, we reported that hackers attacked three crypto projects in a single day and stole more than $11 million. Payy Network, Duelbits and Meter.io were targeted in separate attacks.
