Cosmos falls nearly 8% as rising futures open interest fails to offset selling pressure
Cosmos slides 7.78% today to $1.848

Futures buildup meets resistance test amid unresolved momentum

Open interest in Cosmos futures on Binance rose by 16.63%, reaching approximately $31.15 million during a period when the token traded near key resistance levels. Cosmos maintained its position above several key moving averages throughout the week. Market momentum and direction remained undetermined as immediate resistance and support levels were tested, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, views the sharp 7.78% decline in Cosmos (ATOM) despite rising open interest as a sign of underlying fragility. He notes that technical signals suggest lingering selling pressure even though the price is above key moving averages and indicators appear bullish. Kharitonov is skeptical of the bullish setup, highlighting that persistent volatility and failed breakouts near resistance undermine confidence. He sees the confluence of overbought momentum readings and downside gaps as signals of possible exhaustion. "Strong technical underpinnings are being outpaced by market selling, so I remain cautious until Cosmos regains control above resistance with volume," Kharitonov warns.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, remains constructive on Cosmos as he interprets the surge in futures open interest as proof of growing institutional and trader engagement. He emphasizes that Cosmos continues to trade above crucial moving averages, showing that its bullish structure remains intact despite intraday setbacks. Karapetjanc is confident the asset is consolidating in a healthy range, with momentum tilting toward further growth. For him, tested support and strengthening inflows offer several setups for bulls. "The market offers dynamic opportunities, and I expect Cosmos to push higher from its current consolidation base," Karapetjanc affirms.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, sees Cosmos caught between opposing short-term forces. He points to positive momentum on most technical indicators, but notes price action staying pinned near intraday lows after a downside gap. Turakhiya thinks the current volatility band presents swing opportunities on both sides as sentiment resets. He is watching for a breakout from the consolidation range as the next decisive signal. "I would look for reactive setups near $1.828 support or a momentum trade above $1.934 resistance," Turakhiya suggests.

Bullish technicals offset by intraday losses and negative tone

ATOM/USD is trading above the 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages ($1.7963, $1.67686, and $1.706405 respectively), highlighting sustained bullish pressure across short, medium, and long-term trends. The Ichimoku Kijun support stands at $1.7775. Near-term resistance and support are at $1.934 and $1.828, respectively. Momentum indicators show broad bullish momentum: the MACD and ADX both point to a buy, and the RSI is in buying territory at 58.24. The CCI indicates an overbought condition, and the Stochastic RSI is neutral. Bull/Bear Power is positive, confirming buyer dominance intraday, while the Awesome Oscillator also signals a buy. Despite these signals, ATOM/USD has declined $0.156 or 7.78% today, opening with a downside gap of about 4.14%. The price remains near today's low, with intraday volatility at 5.80%. The tone is negative after the open, aligned with short-term momentum shifts despite underlying bullish structural supports.

Earlier, analysts noted that Cosmos was struggling to overcome persistent downward pressure, with bearish momentum dominating recent trading sessions. The current setup adds a new dimension by highlighting a shift toward bullish structural signals despite lingering volatility, making a sustained break above the $1.934 resistance level a key development to watch for any decisive trend change.
