Crypto liquidations hit $803 million as SanDisk-linked contracts outpace XRP losses in chip selloff
Crypto faces $803M wipeout

A broad risk-off move across crypto and semiconductor-linked trades wipes out about $803 million in leveraged positions over 24 hours, with bullish bets accounting for the vast majority of losses. The selling intensifies as South Korea's KOSPI drops more than 6% and tokenized contracts tied to U.S. chip names emerge among the hardest-hit instruments on crypto exchanges.

Highlights

  • Forced liquidations across 10 crypto exchanges total $803 million in 24 hours, with $694 million from long positions and 172,113 traders impacted.
  • SanDisk-linked perpetual futures record $19.09 million in liquidations, surpassing XRP, as chip-related contracts see outsized losses alongside major tokens during the broader chip rout.
  • In the last four hours, $59 million of $74 million liquidated comes from shorts as bitcoin rebounds above $83,000, shifting sentiment ahead of Thursday's U.S. inflation report.

Liquidations accelerate across crypto and chip-linked trades

As reported by CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, forced liquidations across 10 exchanges reach about $803 million over the past 24 hours, with $694 million, or 86%, tied to long positions and 172,113 traders affected. A liquidation occurs when an exchange closes a leveraged position after losses consume the trader's collateral.

Much of the damage is concentrated in the last 12 hours, when about $595 million, nearly three-quarters of the daily total, is wiped out as bitcoin falls to just under $81,000 and South Korea's KOSPI slides more than 6%. The largest single liquidation is a $9.65 million bitcoin long on Binance, closed at about $81,773, while Binance accounts for roughly half of all liquidations.

Bitcoin leads the losses with $181 million in liquidations, followed closely by ether at $178 million despite its smaller market size. SOL positions lose $60 million, while ZEC and NEAR see $24 million and $22 million in liquidations, respectively.

Chip rout highlights growing crossover with crypto venues

Perpetual futures tracking SanDisk, the U.S. memory-chip maker, post $19.09 million in liquidations, slightly above the $19.04 million recorded for HYPE and the $18.78 million for XRP. The figures point to how heavily leveraged bets on chip-related instruments now sit alongside major crypto tokens on round-the-clock trading venues.

Other semiconductor-linked contracts also appear among the losses, including SK Hynix, Micron and SOXL, the triple-leveraged U.S. semiconductor ETF, with SOXL alone seeing $7.21 million liquidated. CoinDesk reports that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each fall about 8% amid concerns over AI-related valuations and rising competition from Chinese memory-chip makers, matching the broader selloff in Seoul.

Elsewhere, oil-linked contracts move in the opposite direction, with WTI and Brent among the few instruments where short positions account for most liquidations as Brent holds near $106 after a three-day rally. In the past four hours, the pattern in crypto also shifts, with $59 million of the $74 million liquidated, or 79%, coming from shorts as bitcoin rebounds above $83,000, leaving the market heading into Thursday's U.S. inflation report with much of its long leverage already cleared.

Our earlier coverage of the selloff in AI- and chip-linked equities explained how mounting doubts about who will ultimately profit from heavy AI spending sparked a broader risk-off move. We noted that South Korea’s tech-heavy KOSPI took a severe hit amid rising competition concerns from Chinese memory-chip makers, while elevated oil prices and weaker China demand signals added to the pressure across global markets.
