Binance sees hedge funds explore crypto arbitrage opportunities
Institutional interest in crypto trading venues is broadening as traditional hedge funds assess arbitrage strategies linked to instruments that mirror parts of traditional finance. Binance says the shift is being supported by deeper liquidity, continuous trading and weekend price discovery, even as adoption remains at an early stage.

Institutional demand builds for hybrid trading strategies
As reported by The Block, Binance VIP and institutional head Catherine Chen says traditional hedge funds are becoming more active in exploring crypto platforms for arbitrage opportunities tied to products such as cash equities and perpetual futures.Chen says funds that were previously only curious are now showing more concrete interest as they evaluate the practical advantages of crypto venues. She points to improved market depth, 24/7 trading and weekend price discovery as reasons these strategies are becoming more relevant, while noting that liquidity has often been insufficient on second- or third-tier exchanges and DeFi venues.
Even so, Chen describes the engagement as still being in its early stages and says she does not expect flows to accelerate overnight. She says current signals are more useful as indicators of movement over the next 12 to 18 months than as signs of an immediate surge.
Growth remains early as regulation shapes convergence
Chen says a similar shift is taking place among crypto-native clients, which are adding more instruments tied to traditional finance products as they build hybrid portfolios. In her view, these investors are becoming more willing to cross into markets that were once outside their usual focus. She cites rapid growth in Binance volumes for traditional finance-linked instruments, although from a comparatively small base against established markets. According to Chen, cash-equity assets under management rise from about $800 million to $900 million to $1.4 billion, while TradFi perpetual futures volume increases from roughly $20 billion to $30 billion a month at launch at the start of this year to about $400 billion every 30 days.
Chen adds that tokenization and cross-asset trading are still developing, with no single standard yet in place for traders and institutions. She suggests regulatory clarity is likely to matter more than any one venue's product range in determining how traditional and crypto-native trading ultimately come together.
Our earlier coverage of the UK’s £3.8 billion bitcoin seizure case explained how a London High Court ruling backed applying Chinese law to claims over 61,000 BTC tied to the Zhimin Qian fraud investigation. We noted that this approach could narrow victims’ chances of recovering the assets while leaving final ownership unresolved as further hearings (and a planned appeal) determine who ultimately has a valid interest in the bitcoin.
