  • Chinese regulators moved to confiscate about $5 billion in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on October 14, escalating regulatory risk and increasing chances of forced liquidation in supply.
  • BTC/USD trades below key short- and medium-term moving averages as technical indicators show strong seller dominance, with price likely to consolidate between $80,047 and $83,345.

Institutional demand wanes as US security focus, China seizures heighten risk

U.S. government officials have focused on safeguarding and thoroughly accounting for current federal Bitcoin holdings—estimated at 319,000 to 328,000 BTC as of early October 2026—rather than pursuing new acquisitions, according to TradingView. This prioritization of asset security signals a pause in potential large-scale government buying, which temporarily limits fresh institutional demand. Separately, on October 14, 2026, Chinese authorities submitted an application to confiscate approximately $5 billion in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in a major fraud and money laundering case, according to U, highlighting elevated regulatory risk and the possibility of forced liquidation impacting circulating supply. These events contribute to an environment of supply uncertainty and administrative caution.

Bearish momentum persists as key resistance holds, technicals weaken

On the H4 timeframe, BTC is trading below the MA-20 at $83,013 and MA-50 at $83,021; on the daily chart, it remains above the MA-200 at $72,243. Immediate resistance stands at the Ichimoku Kijun level of $82,692, while support is defined at $80,047. Indicators show persistent weakness with both MACD and ADX flashing sell signals. RSI is at 38.07, confirming bearish momentum, while oversold readings from Stoch RSI, CCI, and Bull/Bear Power underscore continued seller dominance intraday. The Awesome Oscillator also maintains a negative outlook, and there are no significant divergences among the oscillators.

Downside risks dominate as price remains range-bound near support

Short-term, BTC is expected to stay within the $80,047 to $83,345 range, reflecting a typical volatility band relative to current levels. Probability for a move lower remains very high, while the chance of a bullish reversal is currently low. The baseline scenario anticipates consolidation between these levels. Upside risk would require a breakout above immediate resistance, with further downside possible if support at $80,047 gives way.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees the U.S. government's focus on safeguarding existing federal Bitcoin holdings as a sign of near-term institutional demand cooling. He notes that the potential for forced liquidations in China raises supply uncertainty and weighs on overall sentiment. Technical signals point to persistent weakness, consolidating Bitcoin in a defined short-term range. The analyst remains confident that longer-term trends stay intact despite current bearish momentum. "If support at $80,047 holds, I expect buyers to regroup, but for now, caution is advised until bullish momentum clearly returns."

Earlier, analysts noted that persistent inflation and macro-driven selling pressures were increasing downside risks for Bitcoin. The current environment, now shaped by significant government asset management actions and heightened regulatory interventions, further underscores the importance of monitoring the $80,047 support level as a decisive threshold for future price direction.
