Ledger unveils new crypto wallet with enhanced security features
Ledger's new wallet

Ledger has introduced Atom, a new hardware cryptocurrency wallet with enhanced protection against physical tampering. The announcement came just days after the manufacturer confirmed that malicious implants had been discovered inside wallets sold through an authorized reseller in Asia.

Priced at $849, the new device combines the functionality of a crypto wallet and a smartphone. Ledger Atom allows users to run familiar Android apps while keeping cryptocurrency operations isolated in a secure environment. According to the company, this architecture prevents attacks involving malicious hardware components similar to those discovered in Asia.

The device can also detect signs of physical tampering even when powered off. Shipments are expected to begin in summer 2027.

Ledger also promises support for AI agent transaction approvals, encrypted messaging, and post-quantum cryptography designed to protect against potential threats from quantum computers.

Ledger tightens requirements for retailers

The Atom presentation comes amid a security scandal involving the company's hardware wallets. Earlier reports revealed that malicious components had been found in devices sold through authorized reseller CryptoBilis.

Following the incident, Ledger instructed distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales of its products. European electronics retailer MediaMarkt also removed Ledger wallets from its shelves.

A company spokesperson emphasized that Atom's security features were not developed in response to isolated incidents. However, the spokesperson did not specify when work on the new technologies began.

At the same time, Ledger updated its rules for authorized retailers. Devices must no longer be kept on open display and should instead be handed directly to customers at the time of purchase. The company also reiterated its strict ban on reselling returned wallets.

What crypto wallets does Ledger offer?

Before unveiling Atom, Ledger offered five hardware wallet models. The most affordable devices in its lineup are the Nano S Plus and Nano X, which resemble USB flash drives. More advanced models, including Flex, Stax, and Nano Gen5, feature touchscreens that allow users to review transaction details before confirming them. All devices store private keys in secure chips, keeping them isolated from computers and smartphones.

Meanwhile, Ledger has been gradually expanding the capabilities of its devices beyond cryptocurrency storage. For example, Flex and Stax feature E Ink displays, Bluetooth connectivity, and NFC support, while Nano Gen5 is designed not only for managing digital assets but also for secure authentication in online services. The new Atom continues this strategy, but for the first time combines a hardware crypto wallet with a full Android operating system and the ability to run third-party applications.

Previously, Ledger also unveiled a device for signing transactions.
