Crypto miners post mixed September output as CleanSpark shifts reporting, BitFuFu reviews Ethiopia deal
September production trends across listed bitcoin miners show softer output at CleanSpark and BitFuFu, while Canaan holds steady after several monthly declines. The update also highlights a strategic shift by CleanSpark toward quarterly disclosures and a potential setback for BitFuFu's expansion plans in Ethiopia.
Highlights
- CleanSpark mined 529 BTC in September (down 11%) and will shift from monthly to quarterly mining updates as it expands its data center business.
- BitFuFu's total September production fell 4% to 167 BTC, with a 20% drop in cloud mining output and ongoing risks tied to a $4.1 million Ethiopia site acquisition.
- Canaan's September BTC output held steady at 44 BTC, while its Nordic 8 MW heat-recovery project serving 2,800 homes is now fully operational.
September production and reporting changes
As reported by The Block, CleanSpark mined 529 BTC in September, down nearly 11% from 593 BTC in August, while BitFuFu produced 167 BTC, a 4% decline from 174 BTC in the prior month, and Canaan mined 44 BTC, unchanged from August.CleanSpark ended September with 13,530 BTC on its balance sheet, down from 13,703 BTC at the end of August. The company said it sold 2 BTC on spot markets and another 700 BTC through call option exercises at an average sale price of $72,928 per bitcoin.
CleanSpark also says it will stop publishing monthly mining updates and move to quarterly reporting as it focuses more on its expanding data center business. Last week, the company closed a $2.276 billion senior secured note offering to finance construction of its Sandersville, Georgia, data center campus, which it expects to generate about $6.6 billion in revenue.
Expansion risks and broader sector positioning
BitFuFu's September decline comes even as its self-mining production rises more than 11% to 98 BTC from 88 BTC in August. That gain is offset by a nearly 20% drop in cloud mining production, which falls to 69 BTC from 86 BTC, while its bitcoin holdings edge up to 1,388 BTC from 1,373 BTC.The company also discloses complications in its proposed acquisition of an 80 MW bitcoin mining site in Ethiopia because of disputes between the site's operator and local electricity suppliers. BitFuFu says it has already invested $4.1 million in the transaction and deployed about 13,700 Bitmain Antminer S19 rigs to the site, and it is now considering options that include fully cancelling the deal to recover part of its investment.
Canaan's production remains flat at 44 BTC in September, ending a three-month run of consecutive declines, while its bitcoin holdings increase to 1,875 BTC from 1,868 BTC in August. The company also says its 8 MW heating project in the Nordic region is fully online and uses heat from computing equipment to serve about 2,800 homes, with a similar heat-recovery project under development in Canada.
