Strategy nears bullish chart signal as bitcoin-linked momentum builds
Strategy is approaching a golden cross on its stock chart just weeks after bitcoin registered the same technical pattern. The setup is drawing attention because the company, one of the biggest corporate holders of bitcoin, has previously posted sharp share gains after similar signals, although the indicator's long-term record remains mixed.
Highlights
- Strategy's 50-day moving average may cross above its 200-day moving average as soon as Monday, signaling a possible bullish golden cross.
- Strategy's past golden crosses in September 2020 and March 2023 preceded share advances of 717% and 1,774%, but the pattern's 12-month accuracy rate is only 50%.
- Bitcoin, after its own golden cross on Sept. 8, has gained nearly 5% to $82,000, increasing attention on crypto-exposed equities like Strategy.
Technical setup and historical trading pattern
As reported by CoinDesk, a golden cross occurs when a security's 50-day average price moves above its 200-day average, a transition many traders interpret as a bullish shift in momentum that can support a longer rally. For Strategy, the pattern could appear as soon as Monday. The company holds $69.81 billion in bitcoin, and since it began adding the cryptocurrency to its balance sheet in August 2020, its stock has recorded two golden crosses followed by major advances.
The first came on Sept. 15, 2020, when the stock traded at about $15.57. Shares then climbed to $127.29 by February 2021, a gain of 717%. A death cross, the opposite signal, followed in January 2022, when the stock stood at $46.83, still roughly triple its level when the earlier bullish signal emerged.
The second golden cross appeared on March 2, 2023, at $25.29. Strategy's shares later peaked at $473.83 in November 2024, up 1,774%, and when a death cross arrived in October 2025, the stock was still at $328.40, or 1,199% above that March 2023 level.
Signal reliability and broader crypto market context
The indicator does not always deliver sustained gains. Since 1999, Strategy shares have registered 19 golden crosses, and on 11 occasions the stock was higher three months later, while only 10 instances showed the shares higher 12 months later, based on data analyzed by CoinDesk. That implies a 50% accuracy rate, with a median 12-month return of 3.3%. The two weakest cases, in 2001 and 2007, were followed by losses of 61%, underscoring that the pattern can produce false positives as well as breakouts.
Bitcoin's recent price action adds another layer to the setup. Since confirming its own golden cross on Sept. 8, the cryptocurrency has risen nearly 5% to $82,000, extending a rebound from July lows below $60,000 after reaching more than $87,000 earlier this month.
Whether Strategy now mirrors bitcoin's latest move remains uncertain, but the signal is likely to keep the stock in focus among crypto-linked equity traders.
In our earlier article on Micron Technology’s weakening chart setup, we noted that shares broke below a rising wedge on the weekly chart, a pattern that often signals a fading rally and potential downside. We also highlighted cooling momentum readings from RSI and MACD, with downside targets around $887–$903 and $770–$807 unless the stock can reclaim key resistance near $1,010–$1,030.
