Crypto shutdowns accelerate in 2026 as 82 projects close
Crypto closures surge 2026

A wave of closures across digital asset businesses is intensifying in 2026, with dozens of crypto projects reportedly ceasing operations across decentralized finance, blockchain infrastructure and Web3 gaming. The trend highlights mounting pressure on business models after a prolonged market downturn and weak user growth across parts of the sector.

Highlights

  • Stacy Muur reports 82 digital asset projects and protocols, including Balancer and Radiant Capital, have shut down in 2026 amid unprecedented closures.
  • Bitcoin's drop from its October 2025 high above $126,000 to below $60,000 in 2026 intensifies pressure on projects struggling with user and revenue growth.
  • DeFiLlama data shows 100 projects announce shutdowns in 2026, raising about $1 billion cumulatively, as venture funding becomes more concentrated and deals fall 80%.

Project closures span multiple crypto segments

As reported by Cointelegraph, crypto researcher Stacy Muur said 82 digital asset projects and protocols have reportedly shut down in 2026, based on a list she published on X on Tuesday. The projects named include Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance, and Muur said the scale of closures is unlike anything she has previously seen.

The reported shutdowns follow a prolonged bear market in which Bitcoin falls from its October 2025 record high above $126,000 to below $60,000 earlier this year, increasing pressure on projects that are already struggling to attract users and generate revenue.

Some projects cite different immediate causes for winding down. Blast, an Ethereum layer-2 network, announces its shutdown earlier this month after saying it sees no credible path to economic viability, reversing the trajectory of a network that once drew more than $2 billion in deposits. Step Finance shuts down in February after a major treasury breach, while Radiant Capital says in June that it will wind down operations after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit; Coinbase-backed Satori Finance also ceases operations after determining its revenue can no longer support the business.

Funding concentration raises sector sustainability concerns

Research published by DeFiLlama in August identifies 100 crypto projects that announce shutdowns in 2026, including 40 in the preceding 90 days. The data suggests many of them fail to gain enough users or produce sufficient revenue to remain operational.

DeFiLlama says the most commonly cited reason is a lack of product-market fit, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue and decisions to pivot to other products. Collectively, the projects raise about $1 billion and generate $250 million in cumulative fees, while nine of them secure more than $50 million each, indicating that sizable backing does not guarantee long-term survival.

The closures are also unfolding as crypto investment becomes more concentrated. DeFiLlama says venture funding rises in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier even as the number of deals falls 80%, while mergers and acquisitions reach 87 transactions at the time of the report, already 65% above the previous year.

In our earlier coverage of the Q3 2026 cybersecurity funding rebound, we highlighted how total investment jumped to $6.8 billion mainly because late-stage rounds got much larger even as the number of deals declined. We also noted that M&A momentum and fewer, bigger financings point to a more concentrated market—an environment that can raise sustainability and competition risks for smaller players.
