As digital asset firms push to find broader commercial uses for blockchain technology, BitGo launches a research and innovation arm aimed at building the next breakout crypto application. The new unit, BitGo Labs, initially targets the overlap between artificial intelligence and crypto infrastructure, including micropayments, instant settlement, and asset security.
Highlights
- BitGo Holdings launches BitGo Labs to design, test, and release digital asset products and protocols focused on AI-powered use cases unique to crypto.
- Initial BitGo Labs projects include Gokubu, an AI-powered consumer application that optimizes spending through a personalized financial assistant and improved transactional rewards.
- BitGo anticipates rising demand for crypto-based financial infrastructure by AI agents and human users, targeting stablecoin-enabled, programmable payments and settlement systems.
AI and crypto product strategy
As reported by The Block, BitGo Holdings launches BitGo Labs on Wednesday as a new unit focused on designing, launching, and testing digital asset applications that the company says traditional financial systems cannot easily replicate. In a press release, BitGo says it is concentrating on use cases "that only crypto can deliver," including rates and returns beyond conventional systems, while using AI to shorten development timelines. The company says the AI economy still needs crypto financial infrastructure to process micropayments, enable instant settlement, and secure assets.
BitGo Labs starts with several projects in that area, including Gokubu, a live consumer application built around an AI-powered card intended to optimize user spending. BitGo says the product connects users with a personalized AI financial assistant designed to improve rewards and extract more value from transactions.
BitGo adds that the unit also plans to publish research, prototype protocols and reference implementations, and work with builders, academics, and institutions across the crypto and AI communities. The company says each project will be judged on whether it enables something existing systems cannot do and whether it measurably improves users' lives.
Stablecoin outlook and sector implications
BitGo's new initiative extends a broader company view that AI agents and digital currencies are likely to become more closely linked as automated systems handle more economic activity. The strategy places BitGo within a growing segment of the crypto industry that is trying to tie token-based payments and settlement tools to emerging AI services. In an interview with The Block earlier this month, BitGo CEO Mike Belshe says AI agents will very likely use stablecoins as their native currency, while arguing that human oversight of AI will remain in place longer than some expect. He makes the comment in response to Maelstrom CIO Arthur Hayes' argument that stablecoins and other digital currencies cannot serve as native currencies for AI agents because they cannot be converted directly into compute power.
Belshe says agents could still exchange value in a form they collectively accept, even if they continue to interact with human-run systems. That stance suggests BitGo sees future demand for crypto-based financial rails not only from retail and institutional users, but also from software agents that need programmable payments and settlement.
Our earlier report on a KPMG U.S. CEO survey found that many large companies are seeing incremental efficiency and growth gains from AI agents, even as only a small share view them as truly transformational today. The survey also highlighted continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure alongside hiring and retraining plans, underscoring that deploying AI at scale requires new capabilities and operational changes.
