Robinhood warns U.S. tokenization uncertainty could limit digital asset adoption
Tokenization rules hinder growth

Robinhood says the lack of long-term clarity around U.S. rules for tokenized securities is holding back broader investor commitment to onchain markets. The concern comes as the SEC opens a temporary route for onchain stock trading and as Robinhood prepares to expand its own tokenization plans.

Highlights

  • Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev states SEC’s innovation exemption advances tokenization but highlights continued U.S. regulatory uncertainty hindering long-term digital asset adoption.
  • Tokenized stock offerings face resistance from issuers like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Goldman Sachs as Binance Research projects sector growth to $349 billion by 2030 from $4.43 billion as of Sept. 15.
  • Robinhood’s Q3 crypto revenue drops 55% year-on-year to $120 million while total net revenue rises 12% to a record $1.42 billion, missing analyst expectations.

Regulatory outlook shapes tokenization plans

As reported by Cointelegraph, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that the SEC’s innovation exemption is a positive step, but not enough to give investors confidence to move substantial assets into tokenized markets over the long term.

Tenev says further rulemaking or legislation is still needed because customers remain uncertain about how the regulatory framework could look in five years. He adds that Robinhood hopes to share more about its own U.S. tokenization plans in the near future.

Robinhood also says it intends to launch private-company stock tokens overseas, subject to local regulatory arrangements. In the U.S., Tenev says the company is still working to find a structure that meets existing accreditation constraints.

Robinhood currently offers about 200 stock tokens on Robinhood Chain. Those products are backed by underlying shares but are structured as tokenized debt securities, giving holders economic exposure without the same voting and dividend rights as conventional stocks, a distinction that leaves them outside the SEC innovation exemption.

Issuer resistance and mixed business trends

Tokenized stock products are also facing pushback from traditional issuers. Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs are among 16 companies objecting to their shares being offered on the proposed OKXICE venue, while AMC CEO Adam Aron separately criticizes Robinhood’s tokenized stock products.

Even with those obstacles, Binance Research projects the tokenized equities market could grow to $349 billion by 2030 under its base-case scenario, from $4.43 billion as of Sept. 15. That suggests the sector still sees significant expansion potential if regulatory and issuer concerns are addressed.

Robinhood’s earnings show a weaker quarter for crypto activity but stronger growth in prediction markets. Cryptocurrency revenue falls 55% year on year to $120 million in the third quarter, while crypto notional trading volume declines 38% to $50 billion.

Trading volume on the Robinhood app falls 48% to $21 billion, and Bitstamp volume declines 28% to $29 billion. By contrast, event-contract revenue rises sixfold to $173 million, while contracts traded increase more than sevenfold to 16.4 billion.

Across the broader business, total net revenue rises 12% to a record $1.42 billion, though that is below analyst expectations. Adjusted earnings per share comes in at $0.60, missing estimates by 4 cents.

In our earlier coverage of the AI-linked tech stock selloff driven by higher-rate fears, we explained how hotter-than-expected inflation data revived expectations for additional Federal Reserve hikes and pressured Nasdaq-linked names. We also noted that investors were reassessing the rising cost of financing large-scale AI infrastructure, a dynamic that added to risk-off sentiment across major tech and chip stocks.
