Tether CEO reveals 150,000 BTC holdings and outlines tech expansion plans
Tether reveals Bitcoin reserves of 150,000 BTC

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company holds approximately 150,000 BTC and serves more than 730 million users worldwide. The USDT issuer is also expanding its investments in U.S. government bonds, gold, and technology infrastructure.

Ardoino made the remarks during a speech at the Plan ₿ Forum conference in Lugano. According to him, Tether's user base is expanding by approximately 30 million new crypto wallets each quarter, reflecting increased demand for digital financial tools.

The company's CEO also introduced the Independence Stack concept, an ecosystem of open technologies that combines payments, energy, Bitcoin mining, communications, and artificial intelligence.

Tether discloses Bitcoin, bond and gold reserves

According to Ardoino, the company holds approximately 150,000 BTC. Meanwhile, short-term U.S. government debt securities account for the largest share of the USDT issuer's reserves.

According to Tether's third-quarter 2026 report, prepared by BDO, direct holdings of U.S. Treasury bills reached $122.8 billion. Including reverse repurchase agreements, the figure totaled $132.4 billion, or approximately 64% of reserves.

The company's excess reserves increased from $4.1 billion at the end of June to $7.95 billion by the end of September. Net operating profit for the quarter totaled $1.5 billion.

Tether also continues to invest in physical gold. According to Société Générale estimates, its holdings may have reached 161 metric tons by the end of the third quarter, although the company has not confirmed this figure. The value of gold held in USDT reserves stood at approximately $19.08 billion.

Ardoino emphasized that Tether's financial resources allow it to develop projects beyond the stablecoin market. The company aims to build infrastructure capable of operating independently of centralized service providers.

Tether expands independent technology ecosystem

The Independence Stack concept presented by Ardoino covers several areas, including autonomous energy systems, open-source Bitcoin mining software, peer-to-peer communications, and self-custody tools for digital assets.

One example is solar power installations in Africa. According to Tether's CEO, approximately 5,000 such facilities serve 2 million users, with plans to increase their number to 100,000 within five years.

In communications, the company is developing Holepunch, which enables applications to operate without centralized servers. For cryptocurrency operations, Tether offers the WDK toolkit, which supports the development of noncustodial wallets across seven blockchains.

Another initiative is QVAC, a platform designed to run artificial intelligence models directly on users' devices. Ardoino said Tether has already developed solutions for healthcare applications, translation, image recognition, and speech-to-text conversion.

As its business expands, Tether has also strengthened its role in cryptocurrency market security. Following the Binance hack on October 29, the company reported freezing more than $1.5 billion in USDT within 30 minutes of receiving information about the attack.

Earlier, we reported that Tether and its partners launched the FASE Foundation to combat cryptocurrency fraud and support assistance programs that use stablecoins. The initiative aims to improve digital payment security and expand access to financial services.
