Crypto staking options shape investor rewards and liquidity
How investors hold proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies affects the net return they receive from staking and how quickly they can exit a position. The trade-off centers on operational complexity, fee retention by intermediaries and unstaking timelines across exchanges, self-custody wallets and exchange-traded products.
Highlights
- Exchanges typically retain 25% to 35% of staking rewards, ETP sponsors 5% to 25%, and staking services for self-custody users 5% to 15%.
- Crypto ETPs offer T+1 settlement liquidity regardless of staked tokens, while direct staking may require unstaking periods ranging from immediate to several weeks.
- Staking ETPs provide operational simplicity and immediate tradable liquidity, making them distinct for investors prioritizing ease and fast exit over maximum yield.
How custody choices change staking economics
As reported by CoinDesk, staking lets holders of proof-of-stake tokens such as ether and solana lock up assets to help validate blockchain transactions in exchange for protocol rewards. While the underlying reward paid by the network stays the same regardless of where the tokens are held, the investor's final return changes depending on the custody structure and the share retained by an intermediary.Investors generally access staking through three routes: exchange-traded products, exchange accounts or self-custody wallets. An ETP requires the least hands-on management because the sponsor chooses the staking provider and handles the operational process, while exchange staking is usually activated through an account setting. Self-custody involves the most work, including securing private keys, selecting a staking provider, approving wallet transactions, paying network fees and monitoring the position.
The article says exchanges often keep about 25% to 35% of staking rewards, with some retaining more. Self-custody users who rely on a staking service typically give up about 5% to 15%, while staking ETP sponsors usually retain 5% to 25%, making net reward disclosure a key comparison point for advisors and investors.
Liquidity profile differs across structures
Liquidity is another major differentiator for investors weighing staking exposure. A crypto ETP can be sold at any time with T+1 settlement, as with other ETFs, even if part of the fund's token holdings is staked. That differs from direct token ownership on an exchange or in a digital wallet, where the assets usually must be unstaked before they can be sold. Unstaking periods vary by blockchain and can range from no waiting time to several weeks, although some exchanges offer more flexible products with faster access in exchange for lower rewards.
For advisors assessing client suitability, the comparison comes down to workload, net yield and exit speed rather than the headline staking reward itself. On those measures, staking ETPs present a distinct option for investors who prioritize operational simplicity and tradable liquidity.
Our earlier article on India’s disinvestment programme explained that most proceeds since FY2016 have come through market-linked routes such as ETFs, public issues and buybacks, while strategic sales contributed only a small share. It highlighted how the planned IDBI Bank stake sale could be a standout deal that materially boosts annual collections and helps the government move closer to its disinvestment target.
