Changpeng Zhao explains his role in Aster amid rumors
The recent surge of Aster, which managed to surpass rival Hyperliquid in trading volume, along with speculation linking both platforms to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ), prompted him to clarify the situation.
Over the weekend, CZ published several posts on social network X, stressing that he does not plan to interfere in the competition among decentralized exchanges (DEXs). In one post titled “Weekend Humor,” he joked that he had learned two new words: “DisAster” and “Hyperliquidation,” both referencing the rival trading platforms.
Rumors had circulated online suggesting that after Aster overtook Hyperliquid in trading volume, CZ might crash Hyperliquid by selling allegedly held HYPE tokens, said to represent about 10% of its total supply.
In response, Zhao explained his actual role in Aster: some former Binance employees are involved in the project, but his role is limited to advisory support rather than full participation.
“The only competitor to Aster is Binance. Everything else is just a distraction,” CZ wrote in one post.
Role of CZ in Aster's growth
Meanwhile, his unclear involvement initially boosted the young startup. According to Coincu, viral posts spread misinformation that CZ was part of Aster’s core team.
Analysts say Zhao’s confirmed advisory role significantly impacted Aster’s market dynamics. His indirect endorsement fueled a sharp surge in the ASTER token, while confirmation that his venture arm, YZi Labs, holds a minority stake further cemented the link.
The market reacted strongly: since September 11, the ASTER token price has skyrocketed over 2000%, rising from $0.084 to $1.86.
The crypto community now seeks clarity on Aster’s future and CZ’s stance toward companies he is linked with. Zhao promises not to interfere, but the episode highlights a broader trend: tokens associated with major crypto figures often see strong growth and volatile price swings.
