Digital yuan expansion and Pakistan dollar talks drive sentiment shifts

The People's Bank of China expanded its digital yuan operator network on August 17, 2026, by adding eight more banks, raising the total to 30 authorized e-CNY institutions, according to Crowdfundinsider. This broadens the reach and institutional access for digital yuan, supporting the development of the currency's transaction ecosystem and potentially improving long-term operational efficiency. Meanwhile, Pakistan's ongoing negotiations with the US Treasury Department for a $10 billion facility reflect continuing efforts to shore up foreign exchange reserves and stabilize the rupee, as reported by Economictimes Indiatimes.

Bearish momentum and resistance cap CNY/PKR amid intraday softness

CNY/PKR trades below the MA-20 at PKR41.206 and MA-50 at PKR41.184, with price holding above the MA-200 at PKR40.763. The Ichimoku Kijun sits at PKR41.126, acting as immediate resistance. Momentum indicators remain negative, as RSI is at 42.929, while MACD, ADX, Stochastic RSI, and CCI all maintain a bearish bias. Bull/Bear Power is the only indicator showing minor intraday buyer presence, and the Awesome Oscillator stays neutral. Low volatility and a slight gap down emphasize a softer intraday performance with prices near session lows.

Downside risk elevated as consolidation expected without rebound

Over the next two to three trading days, CNY/PKR is expected to remain within a PKR40.828–PKR41.238 range. The probability of an upward move remains very low, and there is a high likelihood of continued downside pressure, making a rebound unlikely in the short term. The baseline scenario foresees consolidation near the current level, with a bullish case requiring a break above PKR41.126 resistance. A bearish outcome may emerge if support near PKR40.828 is breached.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the digital yuan network expansion as a positive institutional development, but notes it has minimal near-term impact on CNY/PKR direction. He remains focused on the technical setup, with momentum broadly negative and price stuck below key moving averages. Downside pressure dominates unless the pair reclaims PKR41.126. "Until we break resistance, I remain cautious and see limited rebound potential for CNY/PKR."

Earlier, analysts noted that the CNY/PKR pair was exhibiting mixed short-term momentum within a tightly consolidated trading range. The latest developments confirm this underlying pattern, highlighting that traders should monitor potential downside risks closely while the pair remains capped by immediate resistance.
