USD/CAD edges higher despite Citi short call on shifting rate outlook
US Dollar vs Canadian Dollar rises 0.53%

US Dollar vs Canadian Dollar (USD/CAD) edges higher despite Citi’s recommendation to sell the pair. The bank expects softer US data and the Bank of Canada’s more hawkish stance to narrow the stretched interest-rate differential in favor of the Canadian dollar. The advance remains limited, with USD/CAD below medium-term resistance and momentum signals retaining a bearish bias.

Highlights

  • Citi recommends shorting USD/CAD as the interest-rate gap between the Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada may reverse, potentially favoring Canadian dollar gains.
  • The Bank of Canada's unexpectedly hawkish policy stance supports the outlook for Canadian dollar appreciation, with the rate differential reaching the top of its yearly range.
  • Momentum indicators forecast broad selling pressure for USD/CAD, with a more than 80% probability of a drop into the C$1.3778 to C$1.3952 range over the next five days.

Citi targets 1.35 as rate outlook shifts toward Canadian dollar

Citi opened a short USD/CAD trade at 1.3854, with a target of 1.35 and a stop-loss at 1.3990. The bank expects the main pressure to come from the US dollar as incoming economic data may fail to justify a September Federal Reserve rate hike. US inflation data due on September 11 will be the key catalyst. Citi expects annual inflation to slow to 2.3%–2.4%, which could weaken the Fed’s hawkish premium. The Canadian dollar may receive additional support from the Bank of Canada after Governor Tiff Macklem warned of greater upside inflation risks and said consecutive rate increases remained possible if needed. Citi also noted that market pricing of the Fed–BoC rate differential had reached the upper end of its 2026 range, creating an attractive entry point for a position favoring Canadian dollar appreciation.
Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees USD/CAD showing early signs of weakness despite minor upward movement. He points to the price stalling below the 50-day moving average as a clear technical red flag. Momentum indicators, including MACD and ADX, highlight persistent bearish pressure, while institutional flows suggest little conviction in broad dollar strength. He warns that positioning too aggressively on Canadian dollar appreciation is risky with oscillators as mixed as these. "Key support at C$1.3861 must hold or we could see accelerated selling and a sharp corrective move lower," Kharitonov cautions.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, believes the macro narrative favors the Canadian dollar in the near term. He highlights Citi’s conviction in the short USD/CAD trade, backed by a hawkish Bank of Canada and a shifting rate differential. The market structure offers multiple setups for CAD bulls, while the current range provides a clear risk-reward framework. "This is a compelling opportunity — a reversal in monetary policy dynamics should support further Canadian dollar appreciation," Karapetjanc asserts.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, notes USD/CAD is boxed between key moving averages with short-term support and medium-term resistance defining risk. The divergence in oscillators signals potential for a contrarian reversal if sentiment shifts quickly or data surprises. He sees a tactical case for waiting on a breakout or breakdown from the C$1.3778–C$1.3952 corridor. "I would watch for a sharp move outside this volatility band as a signal for tactical entries on either side," Mehta says.

Mixed technical signals as price nears resistance amid bearish momentum

USD/CAD is trading above both the 20-day (C$1.3861) and 200-day (C$1.3837) moving averages but remains below the 50-day average at C$1.3979. This arrangement provides short- and long-term support while maintaining medium-term pressure from sellers. The position of the MA-50 above the MA-200 nevertheless preserves the broader bullish trend structure. Immediate resistance is located at the Ichimoku Kijun near C$1.3906, with support at the MA-20 near C$1.3861. Momentum indicators are broadly negative. MACD points to continued selling pressure, while RSI at 41.9 and CCI remain in Sell territory. Bear Power is negative, whereas the Stochastic RSI and Awesome Oscillator are neutral. The pair is trading near the top of today’s range, showing intraday strength despite the underlying bearish momentum.

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/CAD remained under downside pressure as expectations shifted toward a narrower US–Canada interest-rate differential. Citi’s new short position reinforces this bearish case, although USD/CAD still needs to break below current support levels to confirm further downside.
