Highlights

  • The Pound shows limited strength due to expectations of aggressive Bank of Japan tightening and capital flows supporting the Yen.
  • GBP/JPY exhibits subdued performance, with unwinding of carry trades contributing to pressure on the Pound.
  • GBP/JPY trades below key moving averages near ¥207.76, with sustained bearish momentum and a projected range of ¥206.72 to ¥208.8 for the next 2 to 3 days.

Muted pound as Bank of Japan tightening expectations rise

The Pound has shown limited strength after the release of key UK economic data, contributing to a subdued performance against the Yen. According to Fxstreet, the Japanese Yen continues to find support from expectations that the Bank of Japan may pursue more aggressive policy tightening, as well as increased capital repatriation and unwinding of carry trades. These factors combined to influence the Pound Sterling vs Yen's muted tone during today's session.

Bearish intraday signals as resistance limits rebound

On the technical front, GBP/JPY remains below the SMA-20 and SMA-50 on the hourly chart as well as beneath the longer-term SMA-200. The Ichimoku Kijun at ¥208.15 serves as immediate resistance for any attempted rebound. Momentum indicators reflect a consistently bearish bias intraday: MACD shows a sell signal, ADX signals a neutral trend, and RSI, Stoch RSI, CCI, and Bull/Bear Power all post oversold or sell readings. The Awesome Oscillator also aligns with the prevailing downside momentum.

Downside favored as probability skews against bullish breakout

Over the next two to three sessions, GBP/JPY is forecast to remain within a typical volatility band of ¥206.72 to ¥208.8. The probability of an upside move is low at 22 percent, while a move lower is much more likely at 78 percent. An immediate bullish scenario would require a sustained break above resistance at ¥208.15, whereas a bearish outcome could emerge if the pair falls below ¥206.72.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees GBP/JPY as constrained by both fundamental and technical headwinds. The pair remains pressured by subdued UK data and persistent support for the Yen from Japanese policy expectations and capital flows. On the charts, bearish momentum dominates below key resistance at ¥208.15. "With probabilities skewed to the downside and limited catalysts for reversal, I maintain a defensive stance until GBP/JPY can break and hold above ¥208.15."

Earlier, analysts noted that Pound Sterling vs Yen maintained a bearish outlook, citing persistent selling pressure and negative technical signals. The current article reinforces this stance with fresh confirmation from technical and fundamental factors, suggesting that traders should closely monitor any moves below ¥206.72 for signs of further downside risk.
