Highlights

  • The dollar gained on the yen as firmer US Treasury yields contrasted with volatility from ongoing Bank of Japan policy reassessment.
  • A smaller yield gap between US and Japanese bonds has lowered the dollar's yield premium, but US inflation supported expectations for extended Fed restrictiveness.
  • USD/JPY trades below major moving averages with downside momentum dominating, and the next five-day range is expected at ¥154.14 to ¥156.17.

Yield spread narrows as rate policy shifts drive volatility

The Dollar vs Yen saw renewed interest as shifts in central bank expectations and key adjustments in US and Japanese interest rates influenced trading conditions. The US dollar benefited from stronger US Treasury yields, while ongoing reassessment of the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy trajectory added volatility for the yen. A narrowing yield spread between US Treasuries and Japanese Government Bonds has reduced the yield premium for the US dollar. Recent US inflation data supported expectations for a prolonged restrictive stance from the Federal Reserve, sustaining carry trade demand for the pair.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, notes that USD/JPY remains pressured as the pair trades below all major moving averages. He cautions that strong US yields have only temporarily paused the downward trend, while technical signals such as MACD, ADX, and RSI point to persistent seller control. Despite a muted volatility band, he sees no sign of genuine upside momentum. Kharitonov warns that tightening yield spreads and doubts around the Bank of Japan’s next steps reinforce the risk of further declines. "A brief relief rally cannot mask the fact that downside risk for USD/JPY is still the dominant factor in this setup."
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, believes the macro backdrop still creates market opportunities for USD/JPY. He sees the Federal Reserve’s persistent restrictive policy and renewed carry trade appetite as supportive for buyers, even within consolidation. Karapetjanc highlights global rate differentials and stable inflation data as positive signs for tactical gains. As he puts it, "The bullish structure remains in play — robust US fundamentals and persistent demand for yield can fuel further setups above ¥155 if momentum builds."
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, emphasizes the vulnerability in market sentiment toward the yen. The analyst points to volatile reactions around Bank of Japan policy shifts as a source of renewed uncertainty. He is skeptical that the recent dollar strength can generate sustained buying while downside momentum remains in force. "Market flows show defensive positioning and little conviction for upside — traders should remain cautious as seller control dominates."

Broad downside bias as technical signals and momentum deteriorate

USD/JPY is trading at ¥155.15, positioned below all key moving averages: MA-20 at ¥156.95, MA-50 at ¥158.88, and MA-200 at ¥158.86, indicating continued downside pressure across short-, medium-, and long-term trends. Immediate technical levels to monitor are the near-term ceiling at ¥155.22 and support at ¥155. Momentum indicators highlight a clear downside bias, with the MACD and ADX signaling strong sell strength. The RSI stands at 32.87, nearing oversold territory, while both the CCI and Stochastic RSI confirm seller dominance. Bull/Bear Power is negative, indicating intraday seller control, and the "Oversold" reading points to a stretched move on the downside. Despite this, intraday price is near the session’s high and volatility is subdued, suggesting a potential short-term bounce driven by relief rally dynamics rather than sustained buying.

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/JPY’s short-term bullish momentum was tempered by caution around long-term resistance and technical divergences. The latest analysis confirms mounting downside pressure and highlights the ¥155 support level as pivotal, with traders advised to monitor for a potential breakdown that could accelerate further weakness.
