  • NZD/USD extended its fall after weak Chinese economic data impacted prospects for New Zealand exports.
  • US Dollar strength persisted due to expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate hike and inflation concerns from high energy prices.
  • NZD/USD trades below key moving averages with strong bearish momentum, expected to consolidate in the $0.5696 to $0.5804 range over the next five days.

Sustained NZD downside as China releases and US rate bets align

NZD/USD extended its decline after the release of economic data from China, a key trading partner for New Zealand. The US Dollar also found support amid expectations for a near-term US Federal Reserve interest rate hike and concerns about inflation due to elevated energy prices. These factors combined to sustain downward pressure on NZD/USD.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the NZD/USD pair under sustained downside due to weak Chinese data and persistent US rate hike fears. He notes that sellers hold control with price below all major moving averages and negative momentum signals. Macro sentiment remains risk-off, amplified by poor trading flows and unsupportive fundamentals. Technical indicators like RSI and CCI highlight oversold conditions, yet no reversal is confirmed. "Until we see fundamental improvement or a technical shift above $0.5751, traders should stay cautious and protect positions from deeper losses," Kharitonov warns.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, highlights that the macro environment still offers setups for NZD/USD. He points to the bullish structure signaled by the long-term MA-50 versus MA-200 alignment, despite current pressure. The constructive view focuses on oversold technicals and possible stabilization if resistance at $0.5751 is broken. He sees energy market dynamics and China’s trajectory as catalysts for a trend reversal. "With buyers waiting at key levels and bullish momentum possible, I remain confident that the market offers upside opportunities in the days ahead," Karapetjanc states.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, notes that NZD/USD faces consolidation risks as sellers dominate but momentum shows signs of exhaustion. Short-term traders should watch for a volatility breakout, especially near $0.5696 support. He suggests a tactical setup may emerge if the pair fails to break down further or if sentiment indicators diverge from price. "A contrarian buy could develop above $0.5751, but I would avoid chasing the trend at current oversold levels," Mehta advises.

Persistent bearish bias as sellers dominate below key averages

NZD/USD is trading below its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages at $0.5883, $0.5872, and $0.586 respectively, indicating persistent pressure from sellers across short-, medium-, and long-term trends. The nearest resistance is defined by the near-term ceiling at $0.5751, with support at the near-term floor of $0.5696. Distant overhead levels confirm a prevailing bearish bias, although the MA-50 vs MA-200 alignment remains technically bullish for the longer term. Momentum readings are broadly negative. Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) signals a sell, and Average Directional Index (ADX) remains neutral, indicating a lack of strong trend force. Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 33.4, signaling a sell, and both Stochastic RSI and Commodity Channel Index (CCI) flag the pair as oversold. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) is negative, confirming sellers dominate intraday momentum. Awesome Oscillator (AO) reinforces the bearish tone. The pair opened nearly flat and is trading at $0.575 after slipping 0.5% on the day, close to the session low. Intraday volatility stands at 0.57%. Trading has shown persistent downside pressure and sellers remain in control.

Earlier, analysts noted that NZD/USD was exhibiting persistent technical weakness and faced downside risks amid uncertain momentum signals. The latest developments reinforce this bearish outlook, with traders advised to monitor $0.5696 as a pivotal support level for potential further downside.
