Highlights

  • Temporary fuel tax cuts have kept Poland's inflation readings artificially low, creating a less urgent case for rate hikes.
  • Fitch warns that persistent large fiscal deficits and rising debt levels pose risks to Poland's sovereign rating and the PLN.
  • USD/PLN is trading below short- and medium-term moving averages with a bearish bias, expected to range between zł3.8907 and zł3.9299 over the next sessions.

Zloty sentiment weakens as tax cuts and deficits delay tightening

Temporary fuel tax cuts have kept Poland's inflation figures artificially low, a factor Commerzbank notes could prompt the National Bank of Poland to postpone interest rate hikes. This policy environment reduces immediate support for the Polish Zloty as it delays monetary tightening that might otherwise bolster the currency. In addition, Fitch has cautioned that ongoing large fiscal deficits and climbing national debt levels present risks to Poland's sovereign rating, influencing overall sentiment toward the PLN, according to FXStreet.

Short-term bearish momentum holds despite long-term support levels

Technically, USD/PLN trades below the MA-20 and MA-50, highlighting persistent short- and medium-term selling pressure, while remaining above the MA-200, which suggests that long-term support is intact. The Ichimoku Kijun level at zł3.923 establishes immediate resistance to further upward movement. Among momentum indicators, MACD and ADX are neutral, but RSI, Stoch RSI, and CCI are all in oversold territory. Bearish dominance is further evidenced by negative Bull/Bear Power and a sell signal from the Awesome Oscillator.

Downside risk increases as volatility narrows near support

In the short term, USD/PLN is expected to remain within a typical volatility band of zł3.8907 to zł3.9299 over the next two to three sessions. The probability of a downward move is elevated at 74%, with just a 26% chance of a breakout to the upside. The base case scenario anticipates sideways action within this corridor, while a sustained bullish move would require a clear breakout above the zł3.923 resistance. Conversely, further decline could accelerate if support near zł3.8907 fails.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the policy-driven dip in Polish inflation and delays in central bank tightening as factors putting pressure on PLN. Technical signals remain weak, with the pair held down by short- and medium-term moving averages despite long-term support. Risks around fiscal deficits and debt cloud sentiment, limiting any appetite for strength. "Unless zł3.923 is taken out decisively, I remain cautious on USD/PLN in the current environment."

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/PLN maintained a bullish technical structure supported by ongoing upward momentum. However, recent developments signal a shift to a more neutral-to-bearish short-term outlook, with downside risk prevailing unless the pair can decisively reclaim resistance above zł3.923.
