Highlights

  • Stronger-than-expected US inflation data led markets to raise expectations for additional Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, boosting the US Dollar and Treasury yields.
  • Earlier comments from New York Fed President John Williams suggested a slower pace of monetary tightening, briefly softening the US Dollar before the inflation results.
  • USD/CHF trades near Fr.0.83 with bearish momentum, and is likely to remain within a Fr.0.8258 to Fr.0.8341 range with a 78% probability of further downside if support is broken.

US dollar rebound as Fed inflation outlook spurs policy bets

Hotter-than-expected US inflation data led markets to anticipate further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, driving a rebound in the US Dollar and US Treasury yields, according to FXStreet. Earlier in the session, dovish comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams had signaled the possibility of a slower pace of tightening, dampening the US Dollar's momentum. Throughout the day, the pair's moves were also influenced by investor positioning ahead of the inflation release and expectations tied to US monetary policy.

Momentum wanes as technical indicators flag increased selling pressure

On the hourly chart, USD/CHF is trading below both the MA-20 at Fr.0.8338 and MA-50 at Fr.0.8332, while remaining above the daily MA-200 at Fr.0.8014. The daily Ichimoku Kijun marks immediate resistance at Fr.0.8337. Momentum indicators show MACD and ADX flashing sell signals, with RSI at 38 nearing oversold territory, Stochastic RSI neutral, and CCI indicating selling pressure. Intraday metrics such as Bull/Bear Power and the Awesome Oscillator also reflect prevailing seller dominance.

Further downside risk as range-bound trading persists near support

Over the next two to three trading days, USD/CHF is likely to consolidate within a range of Fr.0.8258 to Fr.0.8341, consistent with recent volatility patterns. The probability of further downside is high, with a 78% likelihood assigned to renewed weakness, while sustained recovery is less probable unless the pair decisively breaks above resistance at Fr.0.8337. A move below Fr.0.8258 could trigger accelerated losses in the near term.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the technical outlook for USD/CHF as weak, with sellers dominating momentum and key moving averages acting as resistance. He notes that sentiment was shaped by hotter US inflation data, which drove a short-lived bounce in the Dollar, but underlying risk remains tilted to the downside. The analyst remains skeptical of any sustained recovery below Fr.0.8337 and highlights that further losses are likely if support at Fr.0.8258 fails. "Until USD/CHF reclaims resistance at Fr.0.8337, I remain defensive and see the path of least resistance as lower," Kharitonov says.

Earlier, analysts noted that the US Dollar was demonstrating sustained bullish momentum against the Swiss Franc amid supportive technical trends and policy divergence. The latest developments now indicate a reversal in directional bias, highlighting the importance of monitoring Fr.0.8258 as a critical support level for potential downside acceleration.
