Highlights

  • Sterling gains support from UK government fiscal discipline and the IMF raising the 2026 GDP growth forecast to 1.3%.
  • UK macroeconomic data exceed expectations as Japanese policy and producer data maintain structural pressure on the Yen.
  • GBP/JPY trades up 0.52% at 209.93 with intraday buyer dominance; expected range is ¥208.88 to ¥210.98, but overbought signals warn against aggressive long trades.

Sterling demand rises on UK fiscal resolve and IMF growth upgrade

The UK government’s reaffirmation of fiscal discipline has supported Sterling by enhancing perceptions of stability and sovereign creditworthiness. In addition, an upward revision to the UK’s 2026 GDP growth forecast by the IMF from 1% to 1.3% has improved sentiment toward the Pound, according to FXStreet. Weaker Japanese Producer Price Index data and Bank of Japan commentary pointing to unchanged monetary policy in October have maintained structural pressure on the Yen, while stronger-than-expected UK macroeconomic readings have further reinforced demand for Sterling.

Buyers dominate as short-term momentum faces overbought signals

On the technical front, GBP/JPY is positioned above the MA-20 and MA-50 on the hourly chart, with the price still well below the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. The Ichimoku Kijun level at ¥209.05 serves as immediate support. Momentum indicators give a mixed picture: RSI is on a buy signal and ADX points to sustained buyer strength, while MACD remains neutral and both Stochastic RSI and CCI indicate overbought conditions. Bull/Bear Power confirms buyers dominate intraday momentum, though the Awesome Oscillator does not provide a clear signal for further gains.

Range-bound outlook favored as upside risks gather momentum

Looking ahead to the next 2–3 sessions, GBP/JPY is likely to consolidate within the ¥208.88 to ¥210.98 volatility band relative to current levels. The most probable scenario is continued range-bound trading, with chances of an upward move remaining high and only a limited probability of a decline. A decisive break above ¥210.98 could trigger additional gains, while a sustained drop below ¥208.88 would likely invite renewed selling interest.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, analyst at Traders Union, sees Sterling as fundamentally well supported against the Yen. He believes the UK’s policy stance and positive growth revisions are maintaining solid sentiment for GBP, while softness in Japanese macro data continues to weigh on JPY. With macro signals broadly bullish, Karapetjanc expects range-bound trading to favor the upside near ¥210.98 if momentum persists. "Sterling is benefiting from a constructive fundamental backdrop, and as long as ¥208.88 holds, buyers are likely to stay in control in the near term."

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/JPY was under broad bearish pressure as technical factors kept the pair subdued. The current setup suggests a shift toward range-bound price action with upward bias, making ¥210.98 a key resistance level to watch for a possible breakout.
