SDR benchmarks shift as IMF update guides institutional positioning

On October 20, 2026, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) published updated Special Drawing Rights (SDR) valuations for global currencies, with figures based on actual market exchange rates between each currency and the U.S. dollar, according to Brecorder. The release provides a reference point for international institutions, highlighting how the US Dollar vs Norwegian Krone is evaluated within the SDR basket framework. Such updates often influence monetary authorities and set benchmarks for forex market participants when assessing relative value and liquidity.

Bearish momentum intensifies below key resistance on conflicted signals

Looking at the technical setup, USD/NOK is trading below the MA-20 (kr9.4002) and MA-50 (kr9.404) on the hourly chart, as well as remaining well beneath the long-term MA-200 (kr9.5045). The Ichimoku Kijun level stands at kr9.3917, creating immediate resistance. Momentum indicators present a mixed picture: MACD continues to give a Sell signal, ADX is neutral, and RSI is firmly in Sell territory. The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) is registering as oversold. Stochastic RSI, however, indicates a strong buy, reflecting conflicting momentum signals. Bull/Bear Power points to ongoing seller dominance while the Awesome Oscillator (AO) also confirms bearish momentum.

Further downside risk dominates as upside reversal remains unlikely

Over the next two to three trading days, USD/NOK is expected to trade within a volatility band of kr9.3132 to kr9.4068. The probability of a reversal to the upside remains low, while further downside is much more likely. The base scenario is for consolidation within this corridor, though a bullish move could only unfold if the pair breaks above the immediate resistance. Should support levels give way, renewed declines are likely.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees USD/NOK trading below key moving averages and technical resistance, with momentum and sentiment indicators confirming seller dominance. He notes the recent IMF SDR update provides an important reference for institutional benchmarks, yet the technical picture remains skewed to the downside. Kharitonov adopts a cautious stance, expecting further consolidation and additional weakness unless resistance is reclaimed. "Base case remains for consolidation within the kr9.3132–kr9.4068 band, and only a break above resistance would shift the outlook for USD/NOK," the expert says.

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/NOK faced ongoing bearish pressure and weak technical momentum, signaling a prevailing downside scenario. The current setup reinforces this view, with recent IMF SDR valuations and persistently negative technical signals suggesting traders should monitor for further losses if the pair fails to defend its immediate support in the coming sessions.
