Canada travel flows extend August gains as U.S. trips and inbound arrivals increase
Canada travel rebounds strong

Cross-border travel volumes continue to recover in August, with Canadian return trips from abroad rising for a fifth straight month from a year earlier. The gains are driven by stronger traffic with the U.S., while overseas travel by Canadian residents declines and inbound arrivals from both U.S. and overseas markets increase.

Highlights

  • Canadian-resident return trips from abroad rise 6.0% year-over-year in August to 4.4 million, with U.S. trips up 9.3% to 3.2 million but still 23.2% below August 2024 levels.
  • Trips to Canada by U.S. residents grow 4.3% year-over-year in August to 3.3 million, marking the seventh consecutive month of increases, with air arrivals up 7.1%.
  • Overseas-resident arrivals to Canada reach 935,300 in August, up 5.6% versus last year, driven by increased visitors from Europe and Asia despite declines elsewhere.

August travel volumes show mixed international trends

As reported by Statistics Canada, Canadian-resident return trips from abroad total 4.4 million in August, up 6.0% from a year earlier and marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

Return trips from the U.S. reach 3.2 million, a 9.3% increase from August 2025. That follows five straight months of growth after 15 consecutive months of year-over-year declines, although the August 2026 total remains 23.2% below its August 2024 level.

Within U.S. travel, automobile return trips rise 10.5% to 2.4 million, and 57.8% of those trips are same-day travel. Return trips by air increase 4.8% to 637,800, the second consecutive gain since August 2023, while cruise ship return trips fall 4.6% to 32,200.

Canadian residents make 1.2 million return trips from overseas countries in August, down 2.0% from a year earlier. On a seasonally adjusted basis, total Canadian-resident return trips from abroad edge up 0.2% from July.

Inbound travel to Canada remains on an upward path

Trips to Canada by U.S. residents total 3.3 million in August, up 4.3% from the same month in 2025 and extending year-over-year growth to a seventh consecutive month. Arrivals by automobile rise 1.6% to 2.0 million, with 52.9% of those trips recorded as overnight visits.

Air arrivals by U.S. residents increase 7.1% to 701,800, while the number of U.S. residents disembarking from cruise ships in Canada rises 6.5% to 352,100. Seasonally adjusted data also show U.S.-resident arrivals increase 3.4% from July.

Overseas-resident arrivals reach 935,300 in August, up 5.6% from a year earlier, with 79.9% arriving by air. By volume, stronger arrivals from Europe and Asia drive the annual increase and more than offset declines from Oceania and the Americas excluding the U.S., while seasonally adjusted overseas-resident arrivals rise 1.2% from July.

In our earlier article on India’s alternative accommodation market, we noted that rising tourism demand is tightening the supply of traditional hotel rooms and accelerating growth in homestays, villas, and holiday homes. The piece also highlighted changing traveler behavior—shorter booking windows, strong domestic search interest, and high price sensitivity—along with the industry challenge of maintaining consistent service standards as the segment scales.
