Romania seeks stronger air defences after Russian drone hits apartment building
Romania boosts air defence

Romania is moving to tighten its security posture after a Russian drone crashes into an apartment building in Galaţi and injures two people near the Ukrainian border. The incident marks the most serious military spillover on the territory of a Nato and EU member state linked to Russia's war against Ukraine.

Highlights

  • A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed into a residential building in Galaţi, causing a fire and prompting two Romanian F-16s to scramble.
  • President Nicușor Dan requests additional anti-drone capabilities through Nato and directs Romania's foreign ministry to prepare diplomatic measures against Russia after the airspace violation.
  • Nato and EU leaders condemn the incident as a serious escalation, with the EU preparing a new sanctions package and Nato vowing to further strengthen eastern border defenses.

Security response and diplomatic measures

As first reported by Financial Times, two Romanian F-16 fighter jets are scrambled shortly after 1am on Friday after the drone enters Romanian airspace, according to the country's defence ministry. The drone then crashes into the roof of a residential building in the south-eastern city of Galaţi, triggering a fire.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan says he convenes a meeting of the country's national security council on Friday morning and asks the foreign ministry to prepare measures for relations with the Russian Federation that are proportionate to what he calls a very serious situation. He also says Bucharest formally requests additional anti-drone capabilities from allies for deployment on Romanian territory in coordination with Nato's supreme allied commander for Europe.

Romania's foreign ministry describes the strike as a serious and irresponsible escalation by Russia and says Bucharest will take the necessary diplomatic steps in response to what it calls a grave violation of international law and Romanian airspace.

Pressure grows on Nato's eastern flank

The strike follows a series of drone incursions into Baltic member states in recent weeks that their governments blame on Moscow diverting Ukrainian drones. The report also cites an incident last September in which about 20 Russian military drones violate Polish airspace, prompting a Nato response that includes jets shooting down several of them.

Nato says an apartment building in Romania is struck while Russia attacks Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, and alliance spokesperson Allison Hart says the bloc condemns Russia's recklessness. Hart adds that secretary-general Mark Rutte is in contact with Romanian authorities as Nato continues to strengthen defences against threats including drones.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says Russia's war of aggression has crossed yet another line and that the EU will keep reinforcing security and deterrence on its eastern border. She also says the bloc will continue increasing pressure on Moscow, including through a new sanctions package under preparation.
