Alphabet plans $80 billion capital raise to fund AI expansion
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., plans to raise $80 billion through a series of equity offerings, including an investment deal with Berkshire Hathaway. The company intends to use the funds to finance large-scale artificial intelligence projects and build the infrastructure required to support them.
According to Bloomberg, the package includes a $40 billion at-the-market (ATM) share sale program, which is set to begin in the third quarter.
The need to raise such a significant amount of capital is driven by the rapid increase in AI-related spending. Alphabet is placing particular emphasis on its proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to Nvidia’s processors in an industry that demands enormous computing power.
Spending could reach $300 billion
Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi previously stated that the company’s capital expenditures in 2027 would be significantly higher than the $190 billion budgeted for 2026. According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mandeep Singh, Alphabet’s capital spending could reach $300 billion as early as next year following the new funding round.
The analyst also noted that Alphabet’s large-scale capital raise could divert investor interest away from other technology companies preparing to go public, including SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
The equity offerings will be led by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley.
Berkshire Hathaway expands investments
Berkshire Hathaway began building its position in Alphabet last year. As of the end of March, the value of Berkshire’s holdings in Alphabet’s Class A and Class C shares totaled approximately $16.6 billion.
Following Warren Buffett’s retirement, Greg Abel took over as Berkshire’s chief executive and has already begun deploying the company’s record cash reserves.
Earlier, Berkshire announced its intention to acquire homebuilder Taylor Morrison for $8.5 billion.
