Military fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft are being used to support mobility, damage assessment, medical access and delivery of life-saving assistance. Two urban search and rescue teams from the fire departments of Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles County, California, are being deployed as the main international rescue assets in the operation. The teams include firefighters, physicians, structural engineers and canine search specialists, and the department says they are working with diplomats, local authorities and partner organizations on the ground.
