U.S. stocks face breadth warning as tech-led gains lift S&P 500 near records
Tech gains mask risks

A narrow group of large technology and communication services stocks is pushing the U.S. market close to fresh highs, masking weaker performance across much of the index. The gap between the standard S&P 500 and its equal-weighted version is raising concern that a pullback in a handful of leaders could expose broader market weakness.

Highlights

  • The S&P 500 is up over 1% and nearing record highs, but the equal-weighted S&P 500 is down 4% over the past month.
  • For five sessions, more S&P 500 stocks have hit 52-week lows than highs, with breadth weakness resembling 2000’s market conditions.
  • Recent gains rely on technology and communication services, with Intel, Skyworks Solutions, and Meta Platforms each up over 30% in a month.

Market breadth signals strain beneath index gains

As reported by CNBC, the S&P 500 is nearing fresh record closing highs and is up more than 1% over the past month through Wednesday's close, while the benchmark is also on a three-day winning streak. Yet the equal-weighted S&P 500, which assigns the same importance to every company, is down 4% over the same period, highlighting how concentrated the recent advance has become.

That divergence is unsettling traders because it suggests only a small number of stocks are carrying the broader market. The risk is that if those leaders start to weaken, the headline index could quickly come under pressure even with many shares already lagging.

BTIG's Jonathan Krinsky said the S&P 500 has posted five straight sessions in which the number of stocks making 52-week lows is greater than those reaching 52-week highs. He said it is difficult to fight technology momentum, but added that the extreme dispersion and a growing number of indicators resembling 2000 support a cautious medium-term view, even if the near-term result is more choppy trading.

Technology concentration heightens market risk

The concern is deepened by the fact that this narrowing leadership is taking place with the S&P 500 sitting within 1% of its intraday all-time high from mid-August. SentimenTrader founder Jason Goepfert warned this week that S&P 500 stocks making 52-week lows have not outnumbered those hitting 52-week highs with the index so close to records since 1999.

Only two sectors, technology and communication services, are higher over the past month despite the strong appearance of the market-cap-weighted index. Intel, Skyworks Solutions and Meta Platforms are among the top S&P 500 advancers, each rising more than 30% over the past month, underscoring how heavily recent gains depend on a small cluster of stocks.
