Meta and Microsoft drive tech gains as higher Treasury yields test U.S. stocks
Meta & Microsoft boost tech

Technology stocks are outperforming broader U.S. equities even as Treasury yields climb to multidecade highs and reinforce expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening. Meta and Microsoft are leading that advance, helping lift the Nasdaq this week while rate-sensitive financial and consumer shares remain under pressure.

Highlights

  • The 10-year Treasury yield exceeds 5.2% and the 30-year hits 5.5%, prompting a 66% market-implied probability of an October Fed rate hike.
  • Meta shares climb about 13% as new AI-powered Muse offerings, partner integrations, and hardware launches reinforce its push to monetize $100 billion in annual AI investment.
  • Microsoft stock rises over 4% after Stifel's upgrade, with Azure revenue growth reaching 43% in fiscal Q4 2026 and Copilot surpassing 30 million paid seats.

Rising yields reshape market positioning

As reported by CNBC, U.S. stocks are moving through a volatile stretch as stronger economic data, persistent inflation concerns and hawkish Federal Reserve signals push bond yields sharply higher.

The 10-year Treasury yield tops 5.2%, a level last seen in 2007, while the 30-year reaches 5.5%, its highest since 2004. A stronger-than-expected manufacturing purchasing managers index report points to resilient factory activity and intensifying price pressures, reinforcing the view that the Fed still has room to tighten policy. Fed Governor Michael Barr also says further policy adjustments are likely to be needed.

Oil adds another inflation risk after Brent crude climbs as high as $108 a barrel before easing on reports tied to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. According to the CME FedWatch tool cited in the report, market odds of an October rate hike rise to 66% from about 57% a week earlier, increasing pressure on equities as borrowing costs rise and bonds become more competitive with stocks.

AI momentum supports large-cap tech

Meta gains investor support after its Meta Connect conference, where Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg sets out plans to build a wider ecosystem around the company's Muse personal AI agent. Meta says it is integrating Muse across hardware and its Family of Apps, with revenue expected to come from paid subscriptions and transaction fees over time.

Partnerships with Walmart, Best Buy, Gap and Shopify expand the range of tasks Muse can handle autonomously, while new smart glasses, virtual-reality glasses and the experimental Muse Charm widen consumer access points. The strategy strengthens the case for Meta to generate returns from more than $100 billion in annual AI spending beyond its core advertising business, and the shares rise roughly 13% this week.

Microsoft also benefits from improving confidence in AI monetisation and cloud demand. Stifel upgrades the stock to buy, while two other firms raise price targets, citing faster Azure growth and better visibility on the company's AI investments.

Azure revenue growth accelerates to 43% in Microsoft's fiscal 2026 fourth quarter and is expected to improve again this quarter, even as the company maintains its capital spending outlook. With Copilot surpassing 30 million paid seats and the stock up more than 4% this week, Microsoft is strengthening its case that heavy AI investment can support cloud expansion while preserving free cash flow.

Our earlier coverage on the jump in the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield to 5.23% explained how rising borrowing costs were unsettling investors as markets priced in the risk of further Fed tightening. We also noted that, beyond inflation, heavier government deficits and a wave of corporate debt issuance to fund AI infrastructure were adding to bond supply, pushing yields higher and increasing pressure on equities.
