Project Prometheus launches with Bezos and $6.2 billion funding
Bezos and Vic Bajaj unveil ambitious new AI project Prometheus

Jeff Bezos is set to become co-leader of the artificial intelligence startup Project Prometheus, which is poised to become one of the most heavily funded AI initiatives.

For the first time since stepping down as Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos will serve as a co-founder and one of the directors of the AI startup Project Prometheus.

He established the company together with physicist and chemist Vic Bajaj, who previously worked at Google X (The Moonshot Factory) alongside Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Google X has launched several large-scale projects, including the Wing drone-delivery service and the self-driving car that later became Waymo.

Project Prometheus is launching with $6.2 billion in funding, making it one of the most expensive undertakings in the AI sector. However, reports note that the project enters an already crowded market. This means the founders are not expecting rapid breakthroughs or immediate profit.

Details about the startup’s operations have not been disclosed, but it is reported that Jeff Bezos is involved in it in his capacity as founder of Blue Origin, and that the startup aims to support the production of cars, computers, and spacecraft.

Space research and new possibilities

This approach allows for a very broad interpretation of Prometheus’ future research — from manufacturing new materials and medicines in space to robotics and resource extraction.

Vic Bajaj was previously one of the founders of Verily, a medical technology company owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. He later co-founded and became CEO of Foresight Labs, an incubator for AI and data-science startups. He recently left that project and is reportedly focusing exclusively on Prometheus.

Project Prometheus already employs more than 100 specialists, including researchers recruited from Meta, OpenAI, and DeepMind. Reports indicate that other major AI companies — such as Meta, OpenAI, and Google — are also working on technologies similar to Prometheus, which aim to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence and physical sciences.
