New UK superfund launch

Alternative asset managers are expanding further into the UK pension risk-transfer market as new platforms position themselves to take over corporate retirement plans. A Davidson Kempner-backed vehicle has now added two former Standard Life executives, underlining plans to develop a superfund business backed by external capital.

Highlights

  • Genwood, backed by Davidson Kempner, appointed ex-Standard Life executives Tom Ground and Kunal Sood as directors to support a new UK pension superfund platform.
  • The Genwood initiative reflects increased activity by alternative asset managers seeking exposure to the UK's expanding pension risk-transfer sector.
  • Davidson Kempner gains strategic entry into the pension transfer market, leveraging seasoned leadership to target corporate balance-sheet and retirement funding management.

Leadership hires support superfund plan

As reported by Bloomberg, Davidson Kempner Capital Management-backed Genwood this month appointed former Standard Life Plc executives Tom Ground and Kunal Sood as directors, according to filings. The New York hedge fund's Genwood unit was incorporated earlier this year and is expected to become a superfund platform.

Superfunds take over pension plans from companies and support them with outside capital, offering an alternative route for employers seeking to offload retirement liabilities. The latest appointments suggest Genwood is building management capacity as it prepares to enter that part of the market.

Alternative managers deepen UK pensions push

The move adds to a broader pattern of alternative asset managers entering the UK's growing pension risk-transfer sector. Demand in the market has attracted new pools of capital as companies look for ways to transfer long-term pension obligations.

For Davidson Kempner, the Genwood buildout gives the firm a foothold in a segment tied to corporate balance-sheet management and retirement funding. The hires of executives with experience at Standard Life also indicate an effort to bring established pensions expertise into the platform.

We noted that the sale of the £200.5 million Aviva portfolio supported a higher interim distribution, reduced leverage, and left the group with substantial liquidity to fund domestic growth while maintaining its FY27 guidance.
