The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced a $250 million CHIPS R&D Award to propel the development of next-generation semiconductors.
Robert Friedland commented that this move is intended to strengthen American manufacturing capabilities, enhance national security, and promote the broader reindustrialization of the U.S. economy. Advanced semiconductors are widely considered critical components in sustaining the global technological leadership of the U.S. and in ensuring the resilience of domestic supply chains.
Friedland has previously noted that access to minerals such as copper and nickel is critical for developing future technologies and supporting data centers and electric vehicles, according to a recent statement. He also cited the Sunrise Metals Syerston scandium project as drawing attention from G7 nations seeking to reduce their reliance on China for critical metals, as reported earlier this year. These developments reflect heightened focus on securing materials vital for U.S. manufacturing and supply chain resilience.
