Retail option trading volumes hit new records in May and June, Ben Carlson notes
Retail trading records at Citadel Securities

Ben Carlson, director of institutional asset management at Ritholtz Wealth Management, highlights that Citadel Securities saw 9 of its 10 largest retail trading days ever last month.

Retail trader average daily option volume hit record highs in May and was even higher in June, yet investors are still holding significant amounts of cash.

Carlson has recently tracked shifting trends in other asset segments. In a previous note, he pointed out that emerging markets and small caps have outperformed the S&P 500 year to date. He has also remarked on bitcoin’s tendency to experience more extreme sentiment swings than other asset classes. These observations come as volatility remains a focus for both equity and crypto investors.
