Idaho wealth effect grows as Micron stock surge mints paper millionaires
Idaho's Micron millionaires rise

A sharp rise in chip stocks tied to the artificial intelligence boom is reshaping household wealth in Idaho, where many Micron Technology employees hold company shares or stock options. The gains are spilling into consumer spending and charitable giving as workers see retirement goals move closer, even if much of the wealth remains on paper.

Highlights

  • Micron Technology's share price surged nearly 700% over the past year, significantly increasing household wealth for many Idaho employees holding company stock.
  • Wealth manager JT Belnap reports clients in Boise and the Treasure Valley reaching retirement savings targets much earlier due to the rapid appreciation of Micron shares.
  • Rising Micron-driven household wealth is already fueling Idaho's consumer economy, prompting large-ticket purchases and increased charitable spending among new paper millionaires.

Micron gains lift household wealth

As reported by Bloomberg Billionaires, Micron Technology's share price has climbed by almost 700% over the past year as demand for chips rises with the expansion of artificial intelligence, creating large paper gains for employees in Idaho.

JT Belnap, a wealth manager at Treasure Valley Financial Planning, says the move is rapidly changing client balance sheets. In one June follow-up meeting, a client told him he appeared to be $1 million richer than he was eight days earlier.

Micron is one of Idaho's largest private employers, and many staff receive discounted company shares and stock options. That has made the stock rally particularly visible in Boise and across the Treasure Valley, where employees are seeing retirement savings targets reached far earlier than expected.

Consumer spending ripple reaches Idaho economy

Belnap says some of the new wealth is already feeding into local spending decisions. One client who had long viewed an $80,000 to $100,000 truck as unjustifiable decided to buy one after gains in Micron holdings pushed his retirement planning well ahead of schedule.

Other beneficiaries are also directing money elsewhere in the economy. Belnap says one new paper millionaire made sizable charitable donations and took her granddaughters to Disneyland, underscoring how equity gains tied to the artificial intelligence boom are beginning to filter through Idaho's broader consumer economy.

In our earlier article on AI-driven power demand and energy IPOs, we explained how investors are increasingly looking beyond chipmakers toward the electricity generation and grid capacity needed to run AI data centers. We noted that energy firms raised $12.6 billion via IPOs in the first half of 2024 as concerns grow that power supply could become a bottleneck for AI expansion.
