Michael Pettis: China LGFVs rename to bypass borrowing limits
China LGFVs shift names to bypass limits

Michael Pettis, economist, professor of finance, nonresident senior fellow, author, macroeconomic analyst at Peking University; Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, highlights that local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) across China are undergoing a significant wave of renamings.

According to Pettis, these entities are dropping names associated with urban construction and adopting designations tied to industrial investment as a strategy to circumvent strict borrowing limits imposed on them.

Pettis has recently reported that China cut its total number of banks by nearly a quarter, with over 670 closures last year, according to official data. He also noted that Chinese gold imports through August surpassed 1,000 tons, exceeding the figure for the entire previous year, as detailed in previous trade data. These developments have drawn attention to changes in China's financial sector and commodity trade flows.
