“Chinese buy lots of gold because their stock market has gone nowhere since 2007 and their property bubble burst,” according to the view described as U.S. consensus and shared by Luke Gromen, founder and president of FFTT, LLC (Forest for the Trees). Gromen further relays that the gold acquired by Chinese buyers has outperformed the SPX Total Return index since 1998, citing the same consensus perspective.

Gromen previously warned that sharply higher U.S. real rates could trigger a chaotic unwind in international investment flows, according to a past article. He also pointed to reports of U.S. President Donald Trump buying Russian diesel, highlighting increased Russian gold and currency purchases in another report. These earlier observations reflect Gromen’s focus on the intersection of commodities and macroeconomic policy.
