Ethan Mollick: AI accelerates backlog of cheaper software migration projects unlocking $30 billion market
AI drives faster legacy software migrations

The market for software migration from legacy systems has historically been limited to around $30 billion per year due to high costs and the relative ease of maintaining existing systems.

Ethan Mollick said that, after speaking with older firms, he observes a significant backlog of cheaper migration projects now being unlocked more quickly than expected as a result of advances in AI.

Mollick previously argued that 17.1% GDP growth over three years would be historically unprecedented, even with advances in AI, in an earlier statement on the economy’s limits (link). He has also noted that AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic may use disparities between their internal and public-facing models to expand into industries like finance and biotech (link). These observations frame the broader context for current shifts in software migration demand.
