Next leading startups found by comparing engineering hires to capital, Nicole DeTommaso notes
Startups ranked by hiring and capital raised

The next top startups may be identified by looking at the ratio of new engineering hires to total capital raised, according to Nicole DeTommaso. DeTommaso said she studied engineering hiring trends at 155 pre-Series C startups over the last 90 days using data from Harmonic AI, finding that the typical startup added about one engineer relative to their capital raised.

DeTommaso has previously highlighted risks for founders, including warning that stacking SAFE agreements can cost them significant equity during fundraising rounds, as detailed in an earlier report. She has also noted major capital events in the sector, citing Kalshi's $1 billion raise at a $40 billion valuation. Her recent hiring analysis adds to her ongoing coverage of private market developments.
